Time for India to bring Gill and Pant in ODIs

We have two ODIs left in this series. Iyer has dislocated his shoulder and it seems he may well need a couple of months to recover in case of shoulder fracture. Rohit has also hurt his hands and may sit for next two ODIs.

 

Now, in this situation, we can replace them with Gill and Pant and try to figure out our XI as right now, we have no clarity on who will take over Rohit or Dhawan as third opener for 2023 WC.

Gill will come in as an opener. For the middle order spot,  Pant or SKY that is the choice TM will have to make. SKY could be a better option given the form he is in. Rahul is doing well as a keeper batsman and bringing in Pant will upset that rhythm. Pant should come into the ODI side after he does better in T20s, where he needs to start converting some of the 20s 0s to bigger impact scores.

Don't know about Gilly right now. As an opener maybe but he is struggling a bit for form. He will come around though. 

 

Gill can open or play middle order. But he is also a consolidator. He lacks power hitting.

pant has to be bought in and tried at various spot til he works the way we did with Rohit and now even KL is working at 5 so well. With some extra special talents u need to try everything coz when it works they will be the X factor the team.

Gill as opener and Pant at 4 are my choices.

 

Both will come good if they get a good run.

Gill's shots are very powerful and he is a strokeplayer. But he does not like to slog or can't slog on demand.

If Hardik Pandya is not bowling, then he can sit  out and let Pant get a run. We know what Pandya can do in ODI, let's treat this as an opportunity to rotate and groom in Pant. The more settled players we have it's better.

If posters are tired of Dhawan's slow batting then Gill won't really be an upgrade. We need Shaw there.

Very true, if you look at the most gifted stroke makers we've produced in the last decade they've had more issues with pacing their innings than technical faults

 

Rohit-Dhoni somehow figured out that the guy needed time to get set, otherwise he would have forever underperformed

KL Rahul-This guy seems to have the opposite issue of Rohit, he gets out if he tries to get set by blocking, easily rotating strike in middle order seems to be doing the trick for him and we would be wise to see how that goes in T20s as well

DK-Now DK is very fidgety and the best way to use him is to hold him back and put him in a spot where he only has to think about getting as many runs as possible. Interestingly Rohit is the only guy who figured it out, I keep wondering if TM had sent Dhoni and Jadeja up the order and held DK back, the WC result could have been different

I am not sold on Gill's batting beyond Powerplay.  I'd better try Pant as an opener like Gilchrist & play SKY at 4.  Pant I feel can be destructive at the top.   Gill is not the solution we have been looking for.

With fielding restrictions for the first 10 overs for the ODIs, Pant is perfect for an opening slot.

 

He can win the game in those 10 overs by putting India into a solid position.

The ideal order would be Gill, Rohit, Kohli, Pant, SKY, Hardik, Jadeja

 

Having both Dhawan and Rohit as openers is a liability. Both take their time and even if they finish with 100SR scoring 70 or 80, it is not going to help us. 

 

Rohit and Kohli can play the anchor role . Others should attack.

Waiting to see if we still go with seniors or the youngsters will get picked against the Eng B team. Dhawan and Kohli scoring useless 50s will not matter much but a Gill, Sundar, Pant or SKY doing well in these 2 ODIs will be hugely beneficial for the team.

Pant should open with Shaw and Gill should come in place of Kohli or KLR depending on the context. SKY should be given a chance too because he has a certain dynamism that few Ind middle order batsmen have.

Yep Sky will be great at no 4 much better than KL.. For Rahul he should always bat below no 4 where he can't play for his milestones and has to bash from the start

Gill needs to wait till one of Kohli or Rohit retires. At this point bringing Gill won't help unless he drastically develops his power game and shows something special in IPL

Shaw for Dhawan would be a good swap, but it's unlikely to happen given how much Rat favors Dhawan.

Indian batting order needs someone like Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav in the top 4, maybe even Pant can bat up the order. There are too many batsmen in top 4 who take a bit of time to get going and therefore able to score sub 350 scores. Need one batsman to start attacking right away, because we are living in an age where even scores of 350+ can be chaseable.
