Think of it this way. Mostly, they are individuals competing against other individuals, many of whom maybe compatriots.

That is the essense of the Olympics. Individual excellence. And the athletes are representing themselves. Not you and me. 

All this medal tally count started being important from the start of the Nazi games when Nazis wanted to show this off as some metric of societal success. They ended up with the maximum medals in those games and we know how they ended up. Ditto the Soviets.

But it's just not a reflection of societal success. It's societies which take the efforts and spend resources and time to hunt talent on these games do better than those that don't. Medals are eventually for the individuals that trained hard for them.

Me and you gloating by association over the excellent performance of a girl from the North East is very cringe. It's vicariously showboating over someone else's achievements. A hollow activity second only in hollowness to talking about social ills in an Olympics thread.

 

For team games, I suppose you can say they represent India. But team games were added to the Olympics later and only to increase viewership based $.

Gymnastics, Fencing, TT - the very fact our sportspersons are making it to the olympics and going to round 2 and 3 in such sports where we hardly have any pedigree is a great sign

 

Shooting has been disappointing. The punt on going for very young athletes hasn't worked this time. But these same athletes will be around for 2-3 Olympics and will go onto bigger achievements.

 

Now the big hope is from Wrestling - Bajrang Punia, Deepak Punia and Vinesh Phogat.

I am Amazed how regularly we are facing Koreans in Archery for god sake. I Mean first mixed team event then mens team event then now if Deepika wins this round she ll face a Korean. :(. Hadd hai.

lets see if we can do better in mixed shooting events with Manu Abhishek Burman teamimng up..maybe 1 medal

in an elite level tournament to prove your worth you will always need to beat the best in the world.....

Its also luck who you meet. If India wd have got few points more they would have met Taiwan. Incidentally India defeated Taiwan in mixed event. The same guy was there in mens team. 

 

South Korea claimed gold in the Olympic archery men's team event on Monday, extending their reign and winning the country's third archery gold at the Tokyo Games. Taiwan snatched silver and hosts Japan won bronze.

Absolutely shambolic so far in the first 4 days apart from Mirabai Chanu silver.

 

Saurabh Chahudary was the only other athlete who qualified for the shooting final otherwise its all crushing losses one after another.

 

Truly soul crushing for a fan. Losing interest and hope now.

Just thinking back all the events we lost in were either qualification ( reaching finals) leading to elimination ( Shooting) , or elimination based (archery - one against one) and knockout based ( table tennis, tennis, boxing). 
 

The one event which is absolutely self skill driven is weight lifting. Its not elimination or qualification based. Everyone gets the chance to lift and the highest lifter wins. Pretty simple. You are not pitted against anyone ( so in archery you may lose 59 - 60 but another team might win 55-50. So even if you did much better than the team who scored 55, because of your bad luck You were pitted against the best team who scored 60. Repechage rounds in wrestling minimises these chances). So in that sense it is one event which India should focus on much more. As its an individual skill against pressure of being pitted against an opponent. So the pressure is more self driven than external. Not sure why India is not pouring more resource in this discipline..
