Thoughts around Thala ( Dhoni ) being a permanent mentor/strategist for Team India for LOIs - regardless of the captain

Does it undermine the role of the coach or would it be a welcome addition - considering that 2023 WC is in India  ?

Having too many power centres in the Team is never good. 

 

The Coach and Captain combo must be able to function independently. If they are not good then change them. Having a mentor is not a good idea IMHO.

I think if Dravid is the coach, he is too nice a guy and would accomodate any asset to the team without ego. 

 

I think he would be okay if the rest of the team wants Dhoni in the dressing room.

if things go sideways there is a chance it might turn ugly with so many cooks standing over 1 broth. let's hope it doesn't come to that.

As per reports he is doing it for free. So it not going to be long term. Why would he continue to be a mentor for free.

Yes.

 

And decision making becomes inefficient too.

 

Having the Captain and the Coach gel properly is an achievement in itself. And that is a case of just 1 relationship working properly.

 

Having a permanent Mentor means, for the system to function efficiently, 3 relationships have to work properly for a long long time.

 

Not easy at all.

As far as I know @vvvslaxman   has worked from home for several years, way before COVID19. He is used to "free" home food.

I think I know what it is -  BCCI believes that Dhoni can have a positive influence on Kohli.   One can recall the last days of Dhoni and how he visibly guided captain Kohli on the field.  And appeared to have a positive influence - hothead Kohli would listen to Dhoni. 
 

This IMO is the same thing.  It’s not so much team mentorship as Kohli mentorship.

 

Why would the BCCI do this?  I’m guessing because it wants to do all it can to win the cup, also because they

are losing faith in Kohli excelling as captain AND player, and also because they think this could really help Kohli.

Its all rather embarrassing that a Kohli close to retirement needs a mentor. If he's no longer needed than push him out rather than BS like this. BCCI needs to grow a spine.
