We may see some of the old guards returning in different roles. I am guessing Kohli will take retirement from international cricket very soon.

Rather than return if old guard i would look forward to modern approach adopted especially in LOIs A loi batting coach is needed like McCullum, who knows how the game should be seen and played like Mosher, Vijy and ShoonyaSifar 3
goose Posted November 4, 2021 Posted November 4, 2021 Many here won't remember, but Ganguly clinging on as a captain and player was perhaps the most unedifyingly delayed exit in Indian cricket. figo6762, Vijy, Sandeep99 and 1 other 4
ShoonyaSifar Posted November 4, 2021 Posted November 4, 2021 One player I'd love ve to see do well under Dravid is Karun Nair. Was massively wronged and his cricket career got thoroughly derailed at a young age of 25-26 due to clown's ego. Will be a poetic justice if Karun goes onto have a great Ranji season and replaces Kohli in the next 9-12 months. It's a long shot and highly improbable but keeping my fingers crossed. It was at the time, then we had MS who booted the next chief(?) selector into obscurity i.e. early retirement because he was likely to remove him from captaincy!
Adamant Posted November 4, 2021 Posted November 4, 2021 Needless to say Nair has been pathetic in domestics too since then but yeah anything to crucify Kohli. sensible-indian 1

We need horses for courses. We should have seperate teams for LOIs and long formats. Only handful of players have the capability to be successful on all formats.

Captaincy I agree. But he was in quite good form in tests around 2007 2008. And could have easily played another couple of years like laxman and dravid did. He played rather well in the 2007 home series in ind against pak(200 and 100), got some good 50s but threw his wicket away in austalia, and again at home in 2008, almost got a few 100s. He failed in SL, the whole team did. But the gulliotine was on his neck somehow, and he bowed out. Ind never properly replaced the number 5/6 position to this day. Also, in an another team, laxman would have played number 3/4 and should have around 10000 to his name. sorak and Vijy 1 1

Greg Chappell went the way of West Indies , where the former captain is dropped once you select a new captain... One doesnt want any cliques forming when the new leadership group is finding its feet and that was the reason Ganguly was dropped. I do agree that it was contentious Laxman was promoted to No-3 midway during the 2001 Australia series and I think he faltered soon after in Zim series and the ill fated South Africa series (Sehwags debut - Mike Dennis affair). This made way for Dravid to be back at 3 and he never looked back after the 2002 Eng tour. SrinjayDutta and Vijy 2
