Why are his T20I stats so below average for a batsmen famous for his aggressive batsmanship.

51 innings are a lot.

35 sixes

12 not outs.

Has batted at #4 position the most so it's not like he only get 5 balls to play.

Mindset,

Maybe, he needs more time to set in.  He gets out after 10-15 balls.

Anyway, those are horrible t20 stats.  One may argue that those are his overall stats but even last 10 innings show similar pattern.

How many consecutive matches has he played at that position? Doubt it would be even 5.

his batting is not that suitable for T20s. the reasons are twofold: (a) he is not so good at strike rotation (unlike Brat) and the dots keep adding up, and (b) when he goes for his release shots, there are many people on the boundary.

in the tests, so far he has not had that problem. however, once people figure out how to adjust fields (inside-out) and bowl containing lines, he might go bust even in that format too. he needs to adapt and evolve if he wants to survive, otherwise srikar bharat is waiting to take over in tests, kishan/DK/rahul in T20s

Main issue is the strike rate though regardless of the position he's playing.  If he's batting even lower than 4, then the strike rate should be even greater for the finishing role.

You can check here for the stats that you're asking.

https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/931581.html?class=3;template=results;type=batting;view=innings

On the plus side, he's 24, got age on his side and is kept in the team for the potential down the road.

I don't think he has clarity of what his role is in the team. Anyways, if he flops in Aus and RSA series, then he should be dropped for DK.

In t20 steady hitting is needed.  If you try to violently hoick most of the time you mistime. Hetmyer strike rate is low in T20I  because of this. His strike rate is 118.

Look at Hetmyer strike rate against various nations Really poor. Clean hitting requires good base. Even pooran's strike rate is not that high.

Middle order (#4-7) strike rate is difficult to judge (ideally should be used to compare with other middle order batsmen “roughly”) as those who play in these slots have to adjust to a variety of situations (many times no consecutive 3 innings are the same as they could be played in 3 different situations) … For a general discussion, strike rates are mostly useful for top order batsmen (#1-3) esp. openers as they play at 0/0, against a new ball, and in power play.

DK and Pant have played 27 matches together  Pant 123.07 strike rate DK 141.10 strike rate.  On an average DK makes 18(13),  Pant makes 18(15)

Shreyas and Pant have played 27 matches together Pant 119.55 strike rate Shreyas 128 strike rate

Pant and Pandya have played 27 matches together  Pant 128.02 strike rate Pandya 133.91 strike rate

Amazing Pant has played exactly 27 matches with each of these players.

Basically Pant even by comparison with players who played in the same situation has done poorly

He should not hv been in the squad at all. Useless batsman for T20.  Can't rotate strike.  Has poor running between wickets.

Probably made an entry on left handed batter' quota.   Samson ignored once again.  Pathetic.

Completely agree with this. Dhoni had s/r of 126 in T20Is. But he was an effective player.

Can you please compare this with Kohli over the same time period?

He is yet to Crack the LOI format. His issue is balance when trying for big hits. We have seen in short career the number of times he falls/loses balance while attempting big shots. Maybe trying to hit out of the stadium when he try to hoick.

He has age on this side..he will eventually become a good LOI player for India's sake.

Maybe he should try to time the ball and rotate strike so that he don't be under pressure to go for big hit after few dots. Most importantly he need to focus on the fitness. It's a shame if he can't run between the wickets even like 75% of Kolhi.

WKs who can score test 100s in SA, England and Australia don't come around often. He is fine in all formats.Does he have to improve his SR answer is yes but he has all the tools to succeed even in middle order.

To optimize his talent he needs to open and you will have another Gilchrist in your hand who will provide blazing start in every match. If Dravid has any guts, he will have Pant open. You cannot expect consistency from guys like him or Sehwag.

They tried to turn him into a Dhoni and put too much nonsensical pressure  Shastri in particular was an idiot. Kohli or Rohit never gave him the support guy of this calibre needs from his captain.

Guys like Srikar, Ishan are not even fit to tie his shoe laces.

If Rohit had any tactical sense, he would make Pant opener in first few matches and give him freedom to go for it from ball one and drop Rahul down the order and let DK be the finisher. India needs to do something different to win given their bowling stinks.

Pant as a captain didn't open for DC meaning he considers himself as a finisher. Not like he will be a sure shot success at the top given that his problem is targeting seamers. He will be facing seamers with new ball. Real reason is he needs 20 to 30 balls before getting set. We might end up screwing his Test batting as well. I don't care if Pant is a great T20 player or not.  Let him take his time to evolve in this format.
