Kapil Dev on Mental Strength

This whole thing about "maa baap ne itnaa mehnat karkay paal poskay ... blah blah" is nonsense,  As a parent, it was my choice to have children. Once I made that choice, it is my job to paal pos them to the best of my ability, and not their job to be "grateful" for it and always be happy because I paid school fees or bought clothes.  If my kids are unhappy or feel pressure, it is my job to give them a hug and make sure that I address the problem, not dismiss it.

To use Kapil's own phrase:  Bachchon ko sambaalnaa itnaa hi mehnat hai toh ... mat paidaa karo na bachche."

I like Kapil Dev a lot, he is talking complete nonsense. It is like my teachers used to say we used walk 10 miles each way to go to college , you drive bikes and cars, your life is so easy.

Every generation has their own difficulties.

Why blame Kapil Dev ,some moronic people here were mocking players who felt strain due to covid bubbles.Playing in bubble and staying in hotels rooms for months together takes toll on bodies.

In his defense, he was giving a motivational talk to inspire kids to do better, but probably went a bit too far with emotions, bhavanaon mein beh gaya.

For sure.  And the older we get, the more we have the tendency to glorify our own experiences and travails.

He still remains one of my most favorite cricketers and the 2nd name I would put on my all-time India team.

Nothing about it was motivating. Not even the tone.

A generation of over sensitive narcissistic snowflakes who staunchly adhere to the tenets of the 'mental health' religion will obviously take umbrage to it. He didn't even say what many think he said. Even dhoni said one must be grateful to the game which has given you everythin, s statement which is as non-controversial as it gets and in the main it is what Kapil is also saying.

I partially agree with him. You can see he is not very educated. Educated folks complicate simple things in life. Its the skill they take pride in. Uneducated or not so educated people can often simplify the issue to a greater degree. Not in all situations, mind you.

What he said about players is spot on. It's a privilege to play at the highest level. When I see the likes of Rahul sulking with castor oil face and doing kaan me se dhua celebration fir a century to show how much pressure he is under, I get pissed off. I like players like Pant, SKY, Thakur etc who relish the big stage.

Wouldn’t waste time listening to Kapil, who comes across as a retard (or naive to put it mildly) on occassions (this was Ind’s captain and coach at one point)

So saying that they are extremely under pressure is wrong.  Did any player say that he is ungrateful towards the game. Players make the game great.Without great players playing, the game does not become great so it is always mutal.

There is nothing sensitive or narcissistic about admitting that you are under tremendous pressure.

It is privilege which has been earned by these players, nobody is giving them in charity. People to stop acting as if they are doing a great favor by letting these players play the game.

That is a subjective thing. As per them they may be 'under pressure'. If you cannot tell the current bunch of snowflakes they are overstating the kind of pressure they are under despite the considerably higher prevailing luxury quotient they play under, you cannot dog whistle people who point it out they are anachronisms or don't understand what they go through without knowing what they actually went through in that era. Yes players make the game what it is but that also has a lot to do -.more than the players -  with fans and the opportunity the game gives them to forge a legacy and a chance to become immortal ergo the game is always bigger than them no matter what they say or do. The game goes on and even at this moment there will be a dozen others who will gladly take their place if the pressure is too much for them.  So in that regard even if they don't say they are ungrateful actions speak louder than words.

There is nothing narcissistic about admitting you are under pressure but trying to make it look like that you have it harder than others will naturally invite such derision and judgement when that is arguably and demonstrably not true for the reasons that I stated above. It's more a reflection of the current Zeitgeist than specifically something about them which I was referring to.

George Bernard Shaw wrote in Pygmalion, " Happy Is the man who can make a living by his hobby ".

I got the impression that Kapil is basically trying to say this. He is telling players to enjoy their cricket and this will ease their pressure. This theory applies across eras.

Yes, he is saying it in a way that will create mirth in the audience ( and often we see that mirth in the audience is generated by putting someone down ). Kapil has been a public speaker for long and he is playing to the crowd. Current players may dislike his tone and I won't blame them.

But there is something interesting and valuable to take away from the gist of what he is saying. Pressure indeed reduces if we are doing something that is our passion and our hobby, and we enjoy it.

Also Kapil is assuming that "pressure" and "passion" are mutually exclusive

I have watched Kapil play. When it came to going past Hadlee, he was under pressure to pick up wkts. Kumble or other such bowlers were practically bowling wide to help him get that wicket. I think he picked up the wicket in the next test.

You wouldn't expect today's cricketers to bowl wides to help you to try to get wickets too.

He didn’t put it in the right way but I kind of agree with him.

While depression is very real, I also feel it is overused in our culture in the wrong way.

Kapil Dev is what you call a jock. A great athlete but not a public speaker.
