Talent versus selections, what is holding Indian team back

MCcricket

We are doing decently in test cricket, not the same odi team we once were and an average t20 team, main reason

  1. 1. what is holding us back

    • selections
    • fitness
    • planning and management
    • confusion in selection and formats, demarcation of coach and management for white ball and red ball cricket
    • too many players and grooming selections not timely or only a small existing pool of players get looked at
    • should we correct our system and go look at England and Australia who have realigned and have come back stronger

In terms of player pool, domestic setup and talent we should rule world cricket comfortably, what we are seeing is that we are falling behind in T20 and ODI. Despite of IPL and Syed Mushtaq Ali we still have more or less the same 16 players more or less playing in all 3 formats, our T20 style of play is more like ODI cricket which slightly works for us in Australia but overall, we are short of the best. Selectors are not doing their job, especially the current lot is very poor, we need to move to different coach and management for white ball and red ball cricket and this will hopefully let us select better teams as well.

Our T20 teams should have youngsters who can play at the pace that Surya does who clearly is the only good T20 player we have as far as a batter. We do need consolidators who can hold the innings and then play a big innings like Kohli, but there can be only one or max 2 players unlike our team which has 3 to 4 players who are slow starters.

My T20 team will be

Samson

Kohli

Rohit

Pant

Surya

Iyer

Tewatia/Tripathy

V Iyer/Pandya

Axar/Hooda

Chahal/ KYadav

Umran/Sen

Bumrah/Shami

Mohsin

DK has been a mental midget for a decade and bringing him back, having a slow starter like KL who only scores in non-important games, Ashwin in t20 doesn't add up as well, future of the game is guys like Brevis.

For me its the failure to change track when needed.

Its latested for nearly a decade. I remember the 2014 T20 WC. Yuvraj was pathetic through the tournament and cost us the final. Repeat with Kl Rahul and DK this world cup.

The other thing is being basically being unlucky with tosses....kohli was just a manhoos captain....

We have far too many players to choose from. They call this a happy headache. Apparently it is not. It also allows them to ignore so many good replacement at the same time. I like the new idea of two teams playing international cricket at the same time.  But there is one difference i would like them to make. The second team should not have even a single "experienced" player.  It should be all completely new set of players.

Not picking format specialists issue...look at England, they actually pick specialists for formats like T20. You simply can't pick ODI players to play in T20s and expect consistent success

Dravid has destroyed the confidence of likes of Bishnoi who looked like he had that fight & fire in him.  A midget like Chahal whom u don't back in a WC is still preferred...  Tells u a lot about his mindset.

I hope Umran & Sen do well in NZ coz he won't give them any sort of run or backing.  Even then they will mostly play boobie & Harshal

Gill/KL

Shaw

Kohli

Surya

Pant/Kishan

Pandya(C)

Sundar/Hooda

Chahar/shardul

Bishnoi

Bumrah/Umran

Arshdeep/Kuldeep

Realistically this can be our XI for next world T20.

It is definitely talent. To the credit of selectors, they have selected every possible players who has been successful in IPL. Venky Iyer, Hooda, Dubey etc etc. But all turn out to be dud in international cricket and we are still relying on Virat Kohli to win the game and had to bring back 37 year old DK.

Our talent is at all time low and we are no longer producing cricketers we used to in the past.

The real reason is that .... Seniors have to be selected if they are in the squad, irrespective of whether they are in form or suitable for the conditions.

And seniors get preference when squad is selected too. (  Bishnoi, Siraj kept out )

In form seniors who are suitable for the conditions should be selected and not talking them here.

Correct.

The seniors are immovable objects, like placing conditions for a formula to be true.

For the Team Management to Select an Indian Playing XI ff

1) Pick a senior that has had wonderful success 5 years ago;

2) Pick him regardless of failure as long as he hasnt retired;

3) Pick him at the detriment of a young kid;

4) Ensure the kids are played out of their comfort zone;

5) Ensure the kids are played in a non regular manner to confuse them; and

6) Ensure seniors are played in India in Bilateral white ball series to stat pad their careers.

When all conditions are met, you will have your Indian Playing XI.

Can't agree more mate, you have covered all the points.

We're rigid in our plans, whatever we plan we just try to stick with that regardless of the form. While teams across the world try to be as flexible as they can, we just bank of the boat of "experience" to sail us through the tides.

Even now, it's kinda set that Rohit, Dhawan, KL, Kohli will be in ODI WC squad regardless of their form or fitness. Dhawan will be 37/38 by that time but instead of grooming a younger leftie at the top, we are hellbent of giving him a farewell through WC.

The most recent ODI series vs SA in India, was literally unbelievable that Dhawan that not only is he picked but he is captain.

It would have been a perfect opportunity in a bilateral home series in white ball cricket to give a player like Gill the captaincy.

Our Maharathi's are also equally at fault..

Almost everyone will try to prolong their career by playing well past of their abilities.

Eoin Morgan who was from same U-19 batch of Pujara, Mushfiq and Moeen Ali has retired...while likes of Dhawan and DK who are from 2004 batch are still hanging on the spot in the national team. Dhoni who should have retired by 2017 (if not by 2015) kept on playing and hogging a place till 2019 WC, eventually retiring in 2020.

We wont get ready made players all the time..you already hv a great takent pool and all kind of bowlers who have great potential..you will have to groom them in every possible way..

I dont care about any excuses..if you have the talwnt pool already..

many here have pointed out 15 bowlers who can be groomed..

I dont understand why Bhuvi is still playing in NZ after wcup..if he is just only economical bowler in PP that too when is not under tge pressure..

I dont undersrand why Dhawan is still opening in odi..if he is no longer batting well with good SR..

Anyways..If we are no longer able to groom next set of international players who can take on any opposition..despite having all the means..money..coaching..fitness consultants..data analysts..mental coaches..exposure via A tours..meaningless bilateral series..IPL..

I can only blame BCCI, TM,selectors, coaches etc..whoever are the responsible parties if they are not working collectively towards a common goal..to make India like WI and Aus of the past.,and win ICC tournaments..

I dont care if se lose 5 bilateral series from here but if we make 2-3 good players in the bargain..

Make no mistake, Kohli and SKY will hang onto for the next T20 WC.

Anyone thinking otherwise is deluded.

Lack of talent is what is holding India back. Kohli and Rohit never got any middle order help last decade. If there was any talent there in the system for past decade , he would have been selected for sure.

Indian population or IPL's popularity is not going to create talent. Look at the IPL landscape, how many Indian batsmen are are being asked to be finishers.DK was the best finisher from India says it all about talent in India.

Players now have lot of avenues to showcase their talent.Where are the talented spinners?

Gabba test is the best example of our bench strength. A completely rookie side. No Kohli, No Rahul, No Bumrah, No Shami, No Ashwin, No Jadeja. A fortress not even much better sides that could not breach, breached by a young Indian side.  Most recently India thumped full sterngth SA in the ODI series. India has players. In fact way too many. But they are always mixed with seniors. That has to stop.
