They met South Africa in the most unsuitable venue for SA. Imagine Pakistan facing SA at Perth and Zimbabwe at SCG.  Even after beating Zimboks they would have lost to SA. This group was always a three way tie. SA's extreme botching had to happen for them to go through.

With SA, I feel it also depends on whether a match is must win game for them or not. They generally bottle it under pressure in must win game inspite of favourable conditions. Upsets happen but very rarely would any team lose vs minnows in a must win game for them.
