Bad advice from Kohli and Kumble to Pujara..Asked Pujara to quicken up - Kohli

This is bad advice. I think a player knows how to pace an innings at international level. Pujara has been there before even Kohli was a contender for Test spot. This advice is unwarranted.

One has to play to his strengths. For a team's cause, each player's abilities are grouped together and balanced out.  I don't think one should be asked to play outside his comfort zone.  In the long run, this could hurt Pujara.

Dravid played under-50 SR throughout his career and is an ATG for India. This is Test cricket, not T20. The captain should not be allowed to meddle with players' careers like this.

This is dumb and short-term move that will backfire. Let ChePu play in his own style and not come out all guns blazing to hit 3 or 4 boundaries in the first 8 balls, which is what he did. It is ok ONCE-in-a-WHILE. But let him play his 3 off 30 balls slow start - his usual style. Why does Kohli not ask Rohit Sharma to do 5 not out off 45 balls when he starts his innings?

when they play outside India, no one will score let alone score fast. As long as Chepu starts scoring overseas and absorbs deliveries along with Vijay/Rahane we are good. Rahul/Kohli can bat the opposition out with strokes.

I dont now , may be this is how Test cricket will be played in future ?

its pretty clear Virat wants the team to bat just looking at the team being picked . Dhawan has been reluctantly dropped & he will come back if Vijay or Rahul fail or bat slowly . Rohit being preferred over Pujara is another clue .

The priority seems to be batting at a good strike rate .

Che should aim to keep a strike rate of 50. Adjust for conditions.

I am sure there is a happy middle ground between those 20 runs of 75 balls and 70 runs of 75 balls.

But che is a bit too slow. The era of Dravid is over. Adjust according to the era. There is merit in going into a bunker. But the ultimate aim is to score runs. I have noticed this plenty of times overseas that Che sucks the momentum out of the innings. It causes batters at the other end to take risks and makes the opposition bowlers bolder in terms of confidence.

I think Kohli is just asking him to bat more like he used to when he was averaging over 60. He would spend the first portion of his innings defending and scoring at a low rate, but once he would get in, he would score at a rapid pace.

Recently, especially overseas, Pujara just defends endlessly. Thus, when he gets out, he hasn't scored much but has just occupied the crease.

I don't think he expects him to play like Sehwag, just more like when he first got a place in the side.

for the home season you mean.

Pujara shouldn't be asked to change his natural game....However I don't see anything wrong if the advice given is to play according to the situation.....RD in the later part of his career was in Auto-Pilot mode once he got a start and never went into a shell.......a 30(90) is acceptable when you can convert it to  105(200)....Rahul rarely had a 4th or 5th gear but he would definitely get into 3rd gear once set.....Pujara's recent innings have been gear 1 throughout and that is a clear problem...if Kohli sees that too, then no big deal

I dont think its for home season , just that they wont be able to play this freely when they travel overseas . Virat equates scoring quickly with attacking cricket . He himself bats like he does in a ODI .

The problem with Che is. He actually bats aggressively against the spinners. Its the pacers who he struggles to score of.

Wish somebody could pull out stats of Che v spinners and Che v pace.

But a typical Che innings I remember in recent times

India lose early wicket.

Che comes into bat early

Is very defensive v pacers. 1 run of 20 balls.

Spinners come on

Che smashes a few to the boundary

Che gets out to a silly shot trying to overcompensate for slow score v pacers.

The elephant in the room is his failure to score of pace. Where is the get out of jail card v pace?

I said before this series started . Pujara will most likely be our best bat in the next 18 months . He was never out of form , he just does not have the game against pace bowlers especially outside India .

Yeah no point in doing all the hardwork and then letting it go waste. Gavaskar used to say a batsman always needs to be alive to scoring opportunities and not just go tuk tuk patting the ball back even if it is a juicy full toss. Even Sachin changed his batting style in various stages of his career. Pujara should do whatever it takes to return to his big scoring days.

you think Dhawan and Rohit can score or score fast in overseas conditions ? I doubt it man. Besides Ashwin/jadeja are not this menacing overseas

A strike rate of over 60 is a must in this age. The batsmen don't have the temperament and patience to stay long at the crease, so they need to be as productive as they can before getting out. You just need to be positive with your shot selections and show some consistency. If you have these attributes then you are in, otherwise don't bother to show up.

Pujara's natural game is not slow when he is in form.   He has scored centuries at SR of 70+ too in the past.

Telling him to play at the top end of his comfort zone, as far as SR goes,  is perfectly fine....beyond that is not.

Pujara has looked very good in this test.....as long as he plays like this, I see no problem.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the advice. The pitch wasng a minefield. These are home conditions that the players are accustomed to playing. Also Pujara's a good player of spin.

If you dont have an aggressive mindset, you would let go off scoring opportunities of loose deliveries.

Had we not dominated their spinners in the first hour of the second innings, NZ would have still been in the game.
