Raina and Axar? The goal should be is to build a team for next year's champions trophy. These guys will be duds in England. What a moronic selection committee.

Virat Kohli

Mandeep Singh

Manish Pandey

Suresh Raina

Kedhar Jadhav

M S Dhoni

Hardik Pandya

Axar Patel

Amit Mishra

Jayant Yadav

Given the number of injuries....it is a good squad.

Jadeja should have been picked though and, I  guess,  Ashwin is rested because of the injury he sustained.

Mandeep Singh and Kedar Jadhav?  What exactly have they done?  Doesn't matter too much, but resting Ash, Jaddu and Shami is basically rating NZ ODI series at a notch below top tier series.

Our biggest need is a lower order hitter. We have a good core batting lineup Rohit-Dhawan-Kohli-Rahul-Virat. So they need to be supplemented with good power at the bottom.

In this squad:  Raina,  Jadhav, Pandya, and to a lesser extent Pandey, Mandeep, and Axar look to be siphoned into the role.

Raina: we know he is a quality player. If we want him to be a lower order hitter, we need to cement a position in the batting order at 6/7 for him and tell him to train to prepare to play aggressive from the moment he comes in.

Jadhav: has a good range of shots, he never seems to get a consistent run, so I am not sure whether he fits down there.

Pandya: I really think he needs to play. He is the potential allrounder we are looking for. Despite not performing in the recent IPL, it is good that the selectors maintained faith in him.

Pandey: He has the game to be a good middle order player in ODIs, and I am not sure it would be fair to play him in the lower order. It is not really a role he has experience performing.

Mandeep: Serviceable player based on IPL performances, but I don't know where he fits in the lineup.

Axar: more or less, a like for like replacement for Jadeja. Jadeja is the superior fielder, while Axar has shown, over the last IPL, a greater power hitting ability.

Who are we, Australia??Havent won a single series in last 2 year and resting main players.

Lots of main players are injured.

Bhuvi, Rahul, Dhawan, and Sran  are out with injury and even Ashwin is carrying an injury.

Jadeja could have been picked.

Axar, Raina, 'D', Jadhav, Mishra and Jayant Yadav are the worst picks in this squad. I have no idea what they will bring to the team in the future, seeing all the next ICC tournaments are scheduled to be played outside Asia.

Most likely 11 that Dhoni will pick:

Rohit

Rahane

Kohli

Pandey

Dhoni

Raina (will be replaced with jadhav after 2 odis)

Pandya

Axar

Mishra/ Jayant/ Dhawal/ Umesh (two based on pitch and flavor of the day)

Bumrah

Only change i would have liked is to see Aaron instead of Dhawal and Kuldeep in place of Mishra.

OK to try Raina and Axar for the 3 ODIs, even though they should not be in our first 11.

Not a bad squad considering the injuries, but our bowling definitely looks damn week. Dew would play a huge factor so that makes our bowling more of a problem.

Jadeja - Why did jaddu need rest ???? for what???

Raina-Even though m Sick n tired of seeing Raina failing but still he is the only leftie which can come in really handy against Sodhi n Santner. Also a gun of fielder and can chip in with few over. Made runs in duleep so yea m ok with him this time.

Jadhav n Mishra- Decent with their skills but complete liabilities in field and they shouldnt be in scheme of things for 2019.

Dhoni- Forgot sake bat up the order, to hell with project raina. The guy cant last more than 30 balls.

Pandya- I dnt see him playing a lot of games. Specially he cant give 10 over in Indian conditions where there would be dew to. IDeally he should have been on ZImb tour for those 10 overs exp. Might be helpful in Mohali coz the ground is long but in dharamshala he would be wacked. Paper thin bowling doesnt make me comfortable seeing him as 5th bowling option.

Rahane, Umesh, Dhawal, mishra, Raina- Should be pretty much last chance for them. Rahane umesh n raina can warm benches after this n Dhawal n mishra can wreck havock in domestic.

Jayant- Nz have a few leftie so he might be a decent enough option. Decent lower order batsman, but still i feel he is more of long format bowler.

Axar- has to step up his game with batting as well or else soon we might see krunal giving him a run for his place

Mandeep or Rahane as a opener- there is no doubt that Rahane is a quality batsman n Mandeep is slogger, Mandeep can give starts but dont see him as opener in future at all. Also against Boult he might find it tough. Rahane has to step up his game, he ll be in starting 11 for me but i wnt mind trying mandeep as a surprise weapon if Rahane doesnt do well.

Good things- Thank god Yuvi is not selected on basis of no-show, nothing against him but selection should be on basis of perfomance. Thank god i dnt see Raydu's name.

Nice. Shouldn't have rested jadeja IMO. Axar is a liability.

Probable XI in bold IMO.
