Samcric Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 Assumptions: pitch will turn from day 1 and will become very difficult to survive after Lunch on Day 3. Hence quick-fire 30s-40s become very vital when 250-300 is par score. With good shot selection, it is more likely that a batsman can score 30 off 50 rather than 30 off 70-80 balls as simply put, it is going to be more difficult to survive those many more balls. As a batsman, you are bound to get a ball that turns and bounces to get an edge or pop off the gloves. Pandya vs Nair: One of them should play instead of Umesh. Only one of Umesh or Shami can play as 3 spinners will be expected to take most of the wickets. Though Umesh produced more wicket-taking balls in Rajkot, Shami has proven himself as a better bowler over longer period of time. The replacement would be a choice between Pandya and Nair. Would go with Pandya as he can provide an option to bowl 10 overs in a day. Also, his attacking style of batting (if it comes off) will put pressure on the English spinners. Thing is, on a good pitch, you may put your money on Nair over Pandya to score a 100. However, there is not much difference in the probability of scoring a 40 or a turner. Pandya may take 55-60 balls and Nair will take 80-90 balls which just increases his chances of getting out as well. Regardless, result will depend on these two battles: Vijay/Pujara/Kohli/Rahane vs English spinners Cook/Root/Moin/Stokes vs Indian spinners England, I believe has an edge as I think they will continue to look to attack and will take fewer balls to reach a given score and hence as a result, lose less wickets. Also, attacking batsmen throw the Indian spinners off their line and length. They need defensive batsmen to pile up pressure and get into rhythm. If England win the toss, it will be a very difficult test match to win for India. tweaker and Malcolm Merlyn 2

A specialist bowler or batsman would be a much better option. Batting looks a bit thin with only 5 proper batsmen but rather than have a debutant like Nair in the side who will be under pressure, Gambhir should be given one more opportunity. He is also a good player of spin. KL Rahul could be selected and could come in at No.6. Ishant/Bhuvi should come in place of Umesh. I reckon 2 spinners will be enough to do the job at Vizag, so Mishra should be dropped. tweaker and Cricketics 2
WeStMiDz Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 To people selecting Jayant in the team. Is he capable of bowling at a pace that can pick wickets at int'l level or he is merely just a bowler who lobs it up as he was doing in his ODI debut? sandeep 1
fineleg Posted November 13, 2016 Posted November 13, 2016 ^ Yes Gambhir is a good player of spin, in fact one of the best we have. The dilemma is that he needs to get the past the pacers before he can play spin, and he either does pokemon to slips or gets LBW before he can face the spinners. Mosher 1

He bowled in well in Aus-A, rated highley by dravid m sure there is something and what worse can he do than mishra. He has good height and he ll get good bounce. He is also a decent lower order batsman n m sure he cant be a crap on field like mishra Edited November 13, 2016 by Ankit_sharma03 Bystander and Mosher 2

Malcolm Merlyn Posted November 13, 2016 Author Posted November 13, 2016 Another 4 fer for Kuldeep Yadav. Its a shame he had to struggle to get into the UP team for 2 years because PP Chawla wont select him as the captain.

Cricketics Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 I would play the same team. Yes, if Shami is not fit then Ishant as Shami showed signs of getting injured etc or pulling hamstring where he left during the first innings. Other then Gambhir, pretty much all our batsmen scored runs in this game either in first or second innings. I will play the same team and back them to do well. I do not want to throw and trash our bowlers like it used to happen after one ordinary game from a player. I feel Mishra can be a good bowler who was not utilised well under Dhoni. Give him some time under Kohli, he will have lot success. sandeep 1

Texy Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 Is Bhuvi still injured? Could swap out Shami. Should rotate bowlers
WC2011INDIA Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 I feel Shami is not 100%. Also, I am afraid he might get injured...so...who will replace him?

diga Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 If its a spinning pitch, may be its better to have Rahane/Pujara opening with Gambhir playing in the middle order..worth a punt tweaker 1
tweaker Posted November 14, 2016 Posted November 14, 2016 As the action shifts to Vizag, the pitch curator has said that the pitch will be without grass and it would start turning from Day 2. There will not be much grass and we should expect the ball to turn from lunch on Day 2," Kasturi Sriram, the pitch curator said . He further added that he had received no instructions from the Indian team management about the pitch. Vilander 1
