Don’t Behave Like Indian Spectators, Arjuna Ranatunga Tells Sri Lankan Fans

New Delhi: Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga has urged his country’s fans not to “behave like Indian spectators” at cricket matches. The comment comes after the third one-day international between India and Sri Lanka at Kandy had to be stopped following crowd trouble.

“Such incidents should not be repeated. Sri Lankans love cricket, and they feel sad when we lose a match. We have made lots of sacrifices for cricket, and those sacrifices had been made while losing lots of things. Every cricketer in our team is mentally depressed,” Ranatunga was quoted as saying by dailymirror.lk.

“Therefore, I request our cricket lovers not to behave like Indian spectators. We have a very good history and culture. Such misbehaviour is not accepted in our culture and history,” he added.

Due to crowd trouble, the third ODI was stopped when India needed only eight more runs to reach the target. Seeing their team slipping to third consecutive defeat of the ODI series after being whitewashed in the Test series 3-0, the fans started throwing empty bottles onto the ground.

The trouble-making spectators were later removed from the stadium and the match resumed.

In a latest development on Tuesday following Ranatunga’s comment, the whole Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) selection committee led by Sanath Jayasuriya resigned.

The home side now hopes to find a rare win with two ODIs and one-off T20 against India left to play.

Crowd trouble is not new to cricket and fans in the past have shown their disappointment by throwing trash on the ground, especially in the Indian subcontinent.

All he comes off as is salty ,but he is a grumpy old man. Maybe he wants to be taken seriously by his own board.Which won't happen,all this statement does is ,establishes himself as an old man who is still immature.

Well he isn't wrong here. Remember my dad telling me how once the Eden crowd burnt a stand down(killing a few fans but I am not sure whether he was exaggerating) after we surrendered meekly to the WI in 60s or 70s, don't remember exactly when. We are easily among the bottom 3 as far as crowd behavior is concerned flanked by our eastern and western neighbors.

Well sure Indian crowds have some bad behavior in the past.  But the comment is still in poor taste.

 

And thank God Indian players don't behave like the Lankan ones.  Bowling intentional no-balls etc.

He is right though, as we have had history  of crowd trouble which even abandoned the match midway, Kambli crying like a sick puppy comes to mind. 

 

Don't run like Runnertunga , is more apt coming from him.

Dunno whether it's incompetence of CAB or spectators but Eden Gardens has been in trouble multiple times. 1967 incident, then WC semifinal which was very poor considering it was WC and 1999 test match against Pakistan. Then we have Cuttack and Jamshedpur incidents. 

 

Although this isn't entirely eastern problem. Match was stopped at Rajkot when India were on course to win and someone threw paper missile in ODI against WI in 2002.

 

I remember reading about an exhibition match in Pune(?) where authorities allowed extra spectators in newly constructed stand it collasped. Boards have shown incompetence along with unruly behavior from people. But situation is much better now.
