Did India make a mistake of not playing Kuldeep in tests

Ashwin has proved he can be support act at best on these wickets. They could have won test series with Kuldeep .

 

I want Kuldeep to play in England and get Chahal in the squad too if possible.

Absolutely. Ashwin needs to improve his game otherwise he is done. I can handle the hate for saying something negative about the golden hair boy of ICF.

I wanted Kuldeep to be our sole spinner overseas for a long time. Especially with so many lefties he would have been a handful in 2nd test.

 

Wrist spinners who have control are the way to go overseas. Hope Kuldeep is played in England, we saw what Yasir Shah did in England and Kuldeep has better control than Yasir.

Chahal in tests is a bad idea. Kuldeep maybe. Kuldeep has a lot to improve though. He is still very slow.

Kohli is indifferent to Kuldeep. On many occasions, he hasn't shown trust in him. Kohli prefers Chahal though and maybe he has a chance after Ashwin and Jadeja.

Chahal had a good Ranji season last year, but was average before than. So not really sure how effective he will be in longer format.

Before that Chahal hardly got proper opportunities in Ranji because other spinners were playing ahead of him in the domestic teams.

pitches are very diff , before making any such impression we need to understand that

Did we lose because of bowlers?  No . Batsmen without enough practice took two tests to adjust.

Pitches/batting personal different. 2/3 tracks were pace bowler friendly. Different pressure in LOIs than test where batsmen can't sit on you e.g. Sunil narine in tests is horrible

Kuldeep did really well in the Dharamsala test against Australia, which was not a turning track but had pace and bounce.

 

He can definitely be very effective in England and Australia.

 

Problem is ... Ashwin is an all-rounder and can bat at No.6 too, and this gives us options.

 

3 specialist pacers with Kuldeep and Ash, can be tried on some flatter pitches.

Well, Kuldeep in his previous Ranji season scored over 500 runs and avg quite well. I think he has the ability to bat at 9 easily. Ashwin at 7, Bhuvi at 8, Kuldeep at 9 is pretty good. Our No. 6 will always remain iffy (Saha), but the lower order should be able to compensate. By dropping Pandya and bringing in Kuldeep, it will weaken the batting - hence, I'd prefer to see this combo in Aus where our batsmen should do quite well.

Opening with the WK can give us options.  All the regular openers have become walking wickets and this may give us better batting depth.

I don't think Saha would last long in England or SA. Pappu can conceivably open, but he will drop matches and series and I would not want him anywhere near the team.

 

If we are to adopt this unorthodox strategy, Ashwin or Bhuvi should open instead. The issue with Bhuvi opening is that he would need to open batting and bowling - a very demanding task.

 

For Eng, would like to see Gurbani in the XI depending on pitch conditions.

Has Saini played for Ind A? [if so, good move by the selectors] I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that both he and Gurbani are equally untested at the 'A' level.

 

Some of our keepers have opened in the past - Hussain, Engineer, Kundaran (who avg >40 there), even Mongia at times. But, barring Mongia, Saha is not as good a batsman as the others. It can also be very tiring to keep for many overs and open immediately. Hence, I believe that a bowler should open instead.

Saini has played in 2 A-team series and done well.

WK have the advantage of having their eyes set by following the ball continuously while keeping  ... be it the 2nd, 3rd or 4th innings.  This is not applicable only in the first innings.

 

This approach of opening with WK is needed only in seamer-friendly conditions and countries like SA, Eng and NZ.
