The Indian cricket board’s ethics officer, adjudicating in the conflict of interest case involving Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, has ruled that the cricketers will have to abide by one-post-at-a-time clause as mentioned in the Supreme Court-approved BCCI constitution.

The repercussions of Justice DK Jain’s order will not only be felt by the members of BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee, of which Ganguly, Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar were a part, but also by all the commentators.

Many big names in Indian cricket, including Tendulkar, Ganguly, Laxman, Sunil Gavaskar, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Sanjay Manjrekar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Irfan Pathan, among others are doing commentary at the World Cup, some of them from Mumbai studios.

The order effectively means they will have to choose between being with IPL teams, cricket administration, coaching role or commentary. It is understood, the rule will apply irrespective of whether they are contracted with the BCCI or the broadcasters.

 

After the start of the IPL, many cricketers took up short-term jobs, switching between commentary assignments and other professional stints such as coaching and administration.

In the new BCCI constitution uploaded on its website, the “conflict of interest” clause is explained under rule 38 (4). It states, “It is clarified that no individual may occupy more than one of the following posts at a single point of time except where prescribed under these rules: a) player (current), (b) selector/member of the cricket committee, (c) team official, (d) commentator, (e) match official, (f) administrator/office-bearer… (p) owner of a cricket academy.”

It further states that, “As far as incumbents are concerned, every disclosure mandated under sub-rule (3) may be made within 90 days of the effective date.”

Asked to elaborate on the conflict of interest clause, an expert said, “A few personalities are occupying multiple posts, which leads to concentration of power. To end it is one of the main thrusts of the Lodha Committee reforms.”

Welcoming the order, Sanjeev Gupta, who had filed the complaint, wrote to the ethics officer: “Your order has set the precedent/benchmark for every individual associated with the BCCI, every state unit, IPL, TV broadcaster, every BCCI member, BCCI administrators, state unit administrators, etc to comply with the law of the land.”

it is ridiculous to be honest stopping them from doing commentary .  what conflict of interest they have in this.

Commentators can infact influence team selections. You don't want these guys to be handling multiple roles.

how can commentators influence team selections?  they are not selectors.  IPL is  a two-month tournament. what are they going to do rest of the year, sit at home?

These holier than though judges of SC and CoA administrators are an absolute joke and are sucking the BCCI coffers as long as they can through their silly pronouncements. The erstwhile blood sucking BCCI landlords have now been replaced these parasites who look hell bent to perpetuate their tenure by delaying BCCI elections on one pretext or the other.

 

Only people who should have CoI clauses applied to them are the BCCI selectors and coaches. Using it to browbeat others is just a way for this "Ethics Officer" to ensure he has a full time job and opportunity to make some more money.

That's BS, BCCI CoA is rotten to the core! That Vinod Rai from the panel shielded Johri in sexual harassment case, if that isn't a huge red flag then you won't see it even if it you in the face. These people are effin useless

I don't think sachin & ganguly work as commentator for all series. They mostly do for icc events only so it should be actually fine to allow them.

Commentary is a seperate gig and should be treated as such. Let the fully qualified professionals handle it. It's not like writing an article in some blog. It's embarrassing to see these so called commentators always get the players' names wrong.

I will anytime take our players as commentators than anyone else bullshitting crap.This is reason I switched to Hindi commentary .

Ganguly isn't he holding some position in West Bengal cricket association.Instead of improving his state team and doing something useful there, why is he doing commentary .These guys have to decide if they want full time gigs in media then they shouldn't be holding any sort of positions paid or unpaid in IPL or BCCI.

Commentary is fine. I was more surprised to see him in the mentor role for Delhi this IPL.

Commentary is not fine at all. If this guy wants to run Bengal cricket then he needs to forget all about commentary, IPL .

 

He can't have both and he needs to stop talking as if he was some great champion.All he did was choke in big moments as a captain.

I understand that certain jobs would require you to consider "conflict of interest" but I am not sure that doing commentary is one of them esp. if you are doing it in your free time/when not performing the "other" duty
