Vijay Shankar is close to playing a big knock for us, says Virat Kohli

Seems like there wil be no change in playing 11 for entire tournament :((

Kohli doing the right thing by backing his player. Frankly, Shankar did not play poor shots. He was looking solid, scored two out of three boundaries through classic shots, and got a beauty from Roach.

He doesn't look mentally tough, but hasn't done much wrong. He might get a chance or two given that India's qualification is certain.

The only issue with this whole thing is that all this is happening in the World cup.. Had it been in a bilateral series, people would have probably had more patience with Vijay.

If Kohli does have so much faith in Vijay Shankar, he should then bring in Pant/DK for Jadhav.

I fail to see how Kohli thinks having both Shankar and Jadhav works better than having a more flamboyant, explosive Pant or even DK

I understand his reasons to back him. But India lacks finisher against fast bowlers. Dhoni doesn't show intent until 50th over. Needs someone else besides Pandya to score quickly in the backend. Pandya is struggling to accelerate against seamers. Ideal choice would be KKD. worst case Pant. Jadhav is a dud against pacers.

So KKD who strikes at 73 in ODIs is the ideal choice to accelerate against seamers whereas Pant who strikes at 130 (low sample size admittedly) is the worst? :hmmmm2:

Shankar may or may not pan out.

But Kohli has done the right thing by supporting him publicly.   Fans ought to learn to be patient with young players.  Impatience and a desire to see perfect performances every game, risks writing off good players.

Wrong time to do that. Shankar played only handful of ODIs. If he had been playing for 2-3 years before World Cup I can understand. It wrong to even include him in the first place. He is an all rounder. Kohli didn’t even trust his bowling against Afghanistan. I think he didn’t bowl for last two or three matches. What is his role in the team? The biggest problem with Shankar is he can’t hit fours or sixers when  acceleration is needed. When you have seniors like Karthik May be at least should have tried him.

You cannot use the entire career. Just check the stats of matches that involved both Pant and KKD. KKD is a comfortable winner. Pant had starting trouble in almost all the matches. KKD can start hitting from ball one.

Why not? At least for KKD any way. Pant is a rookie in ODIs whereas Karthik is a proven failure. I don't have any issues with KKD being selected ahead of Pant in T20Is for now as he has been genuinely good in that format but he is a horrible batsman in ODIs.

They are playing in sluggish conditions. If you are expecting pant to play a 30 balls 50 innings in these type conditions, they are living in LaLa land. Pant don't have temperament to survive 10 balls in these conditions. Shankar seems to be more solid for no.4 role.

I suppose you are watching something else

Where did you find pandya struggling against seamers?

Fully agree. Shankar is worth sticking with for a while, he shouldn't be written off so quickly.

Jadhav on the other hand seems to have already reached the limit of his abilities and really should be replaced by Pant. However I think the only reason he is there is because there are so many teams that are dreadful against spin or anything resembling spin.

Until India doesn't find a decent batsman who can bowl a few overs of slow bowling, Jadhav will be around. In the past Sehwag and Yuvraj filled the void of extra bowler on slow pitches, now there is nobody (except Jaddu)

India management has to be blamed for current situation if they thought Shankar was answer they should have invested 2 years in him.Now We have to give him all the group games then take a call.
