havent followed Indian cricket a lot for past 2 years except the World Cup, but I remember Karun scoring 303 at such a young age. how do you let go of such a talent?

Grave injustice. Played a couple of tests after that in the tough home series against Aus, failed but wasn't alone in that regard. Generally I dislike all the lobby/mafia talk, but would a Mumbai batsman be treated like him? IMO Rahane shouldn't have been given an uninterrupted run esp for home (+ Lanka 17) matches in 2017 and 18 seasons. 

 

That 300 in Chepauk was epic, the acceleration and range of strokeplay after his 150 , will always be one of my favorite memories as an Indian fan. His sweeps and reverse sweeps , enjoyed how the Poms wilted.

Kohli has no patience for youngsters he failed in 3-4 innings n dropped for ever, and in the same series where kohli failed even worse then nair

Only in India, a youngster who scored a triple ton the last match would be dropped for the next game to make way for a senior. We can debate a lot on if's & but's, this gives an impression on the mind of the young player that whatever huge score he makes if a senior wants to make comeback then he'd be thrown out.

In the series against Australia at home, he couldn't handle the pace of Starc & co. Kohli probably thought of it as a fundamental weakness that cannot be corrected. His total lack of confidence in him was evident during the England tour when they brought in Vihari instead of picking him though he was part of the squad. I feel benching him right after the triple century affected him adversely. If he had made another big score in the next match, he would have been untouchable for a while. But sadly for him, he had to sit on the bench and he has remained on the fringe ever since.

In general I agree that Kohli has been very impatient with youngsters and shown blatant double standards in backing certain seniors at expense of juniors. With that said, i have been disappointed with karun nair - bringing Rahane back after injury was a given, yet nair got 3 tests against Aus and failed whereas Rahane played a couple of critical knocks in that series. Rahane's real blip was SL home series, but he deserved a long rope and has repaid the faith from 2018 AUS series onwards. One wld hv expected a young guy like Nair to go back to domestics and churn out scores like Mayank, but nair has been bang average for 2 yrs in domestic or ind A matches. I am afraid, Others have gone way ahead of him in pecking order now.

Karun never impressed consistently against international standard bowling attack. Some of you can rightly argue that how can you dump him after a triple hundred , that too in a test against England. But he does not show enough acumen to be  a great Test player just like Rohit Sharma. He actually should not have got that chance before Vihari in the first place and he never really showed enough traits to be successful at highest level during A tours and in Ranji other than that innings which is really an exception.

 

With that said some of you are damn right that whether a so called similar treatment would have been given to an above average player from Mumbai or other stronger lobbies. I must admit, unlike Karun they would have got a Test spot for atleast next two years even if they would have scored ducks in most of them. So while Karun's exclusion is apparently justified based on first class performance/merit, we know that the reason was really different in terms of the mindless captaincy, nepotistic team selection and internal politics in play.

Imagine if based on Kohli's strugles against short ball in Tests vs WI in 2011, the then TM had decided he did not have a future as a Test cricketer.

He was dropped right after that series, people tend to forget that fact. He got his chance again because he was an odi player too just like Rohit Sharma.

 

While I sympathize with Karan Nair, he has been given ample chances with India A and he has done nothing of note there.Karun Nair and recent Shahbaz Nadeem were filling in for injured players.

 

Who is he supposed to replace in this team.It is very easy to blame TM. Vihari was MOS against WI and is not getting a sniff in this team.Is he being sidelined due to some nepotism.

Was looking at his numbers in 7 test innings he has scored 374 runs. So 71 in 6 innings. 

Also Vihari and Gill are ahead of him for that middle order slot.

As I told earlier, he is really an average player in domestic cricket when you compare him with Vihari, Agarwal, Gill, Shaw etc. That 300 is an anomaly and once in a lifetime stuff where England bowlers were hapless and everything worked in favour of the batsman. Credit to him though for scoring that 300 but he is never going to be International class. He is basically Rayudu Lite .

No he wasnt, he was in the next series squad
