Deleted_User_1 Posted March 9, 2020 Posted March 9, 2020 While it is true, many ATGs had lot more pace, but no one had the control of Mcgrath. Nagging accuracy with smart thinking. Also got a lot of bounce because of his tall height. Bowled mostly from 128-135 km/h for most of his career. It shows that you can overcome lack of frightening pace with nagging line and length. Also one of the few pace bowlers that had success in the subcontinent. In tests, Marshall who has a SR of like 45 to go with the excellent low avg Multi format (Tests + LOIs) = Garner, McGrath, Akram, etc.

McGrath played in an era when there weren't too many great opposition batsman except for sachin, lara.. good batsman became greats only around 2008.. likes of ABD, Amla, Sanga, Jaya, Yousuf & Younis, KP etc.. moreover McGrath had few Aussie greats to bowl in tandem..

On most polls, ppl will vote for him even without reading the poll question. Some folks have even even built his temple if I am not wrong McGrath = the most overrated bowler because -> oh he used to get Sachin out (as if it is some kind of an accomplishment) Akram = overrated by Pakistanis, and their version of a bowling “Sachin” esp. after Imran’s issues with ball tempering and home umpiring Despite not having class “leading” stats, these guys compete based on parameters such as most complete batsman, carrying a billion dreams on his shoulders, most complete bowler, most accurate bowler, most complete left arm bowler and the bowler with the most skills, most complete multi format player, and so on Yes, these guys are good (no questions on that) and definitely among the best, but not necessarily the best! express bowling Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 (edited) McGrath's pace is very under-rated. Regular speed gun usage was not there when he was in his 20s. People just remember him bowling 132 k at age 35. But in 1999 WC, he was regularly bowling 135 k to 142 k. Plus he got steep bounce on a regular basis throughout his career. You forgot RPT there. The main reason why sachin was not good enough despite having a career of two greats and not one

lamellavig Posted March 10, 2020 Posted March 10, 2020 McGrath cannot be the greatest because he bowled so slow. Also, his T20 and IPL seasons were very poor. He would have struggled a lot in T20 cricket, Forever Indian 1

He bowled 135-143 even in 2003 WC.
