If Bunrah couldn't do much, doubt Shami or Umesh would have. Umesh would have leaked runs

Bumrah's high arm action may prevent him in getting a lot of reverse swing. We did miss Shami here.

I hope you saw what Leech, who is probably on his first tour to subcon, has done. That is what our “experienced” spinners have been feasting on and gathering praises for ... With so much experience, such spinners need to step up their game in the first innings ... What if Eng wins the toss again in the next game, are “top” spinners like Ashwin going to be lacklustre again

Is this a troll thread? Comparing bess with Ashwin He is bowling full tosses on day 5 pitch.  How can you claim that Bess will do better than Ash in England when Ashwin just outbowled Lyon in Australia.

It just shows how great Botham was as an allrounder. He was easily most talented cricketer in last 50 years, there was nothing he could not do,he was just amazing in slips too.

Heavy workload on Ashwin, can understand if he was damn tired in the last hour or so, needs proper rest tonight and a few days off after this test. 

 

1st test: 2+ days out on field, 55+ overs bowled, then batted the same day and did so for 30 odd overs before bowling again almost continuously from one end to pick a 6fer, then batting the next day in the only semblance of resistance in that partnership with skipper.

 

3 days gap

 

This test: Bowled 40% of our overs in 1st innings, a 100 today, more bowling in last hour or so. 

 

In this Chennai heat, despite his injury history which forced him to miss Gabba test just last month. 

 

Can't doubt his commitment and capacity to work hard. He deserves all the success coming his way, not a natural athlete but compensates with plenty of heart.

True, we are so lucky to have Ash-Jaddu. Very tough to replace them, enjoy the show while it lasts, who knows next time English come to India, Ashwin may be on Star Sports commentary team and Jaddu close to retirement.

Gave me deja vu feeling of watching Ashwin's knock in 2012 Kolkata against Eng, scored an unbeaten 91, batted like VVS but ran out of partners despite his best efforts at shielding them. Our entire MO and tail collapsed in that innings, with a little bit more support Ashwin could have helped us set a tricky target say 120....remember Eng got reduced to 5/3 chasing a small total. Ashwin was our 2nd best bat in that series, hell before 2014 Aus tour he averaged more than Kohli....that's how dependable he was. 

 

Alas he never realized his batting potential, hope he does well with bat in remaining 3-4 years of his career. This version of Pant-Jaddu-Ash at 6-8 will make us a dominant team in all conditions. Kohli must play these 3 in Eng, RSA tours.

I have no doubt on Ind spinners succeeding on specific pitches ... Ashwin as mentioned in the OP is cashing in ... what worries me is that these experienced spinners can look helpless on anything that is less helpful

Yeah we saw that in Aus, happened just a few weeks back 

Lyon the GOAT 390 wickets at start of series, stranded on 399 after sending down 200 overs

Ashwin was on 370 something and will get to 400 very soon

Bumrah is not that great with new ball and he is playing in India for first time. Shami Will make an impact in his first test you will see. Their bowling suits indian pitches.

Neither of them are GOAT (at a global level) ... Also I am not talking about once in a decade performances but over the whole career as already mentioned in the OP ... Relatively, Lyon is a better bowler in "unhelpful" conditions (note that v Ind, he is bowling to relatively good players of spin)

 

 

The above table already accounts for good performances at home (mainly because of pitches). Now if Ashwin can turn things around from here on (not talking about performing on "such" pitches), good for Ind!

Average is not be-all, end-all....you wouldn't do such black and white analysis if the player in question is Pujara, would you? More nuanced these discussions, anyway I am assuming you are just having some fun with this thread, so will leave it be.
