I'm surprised England didn't complain about the first pitch?  That was way more toss dependent.  Atleast this one was spinning from day 1

Why would they complain.. infact they were praising the curator in english media that this was the ideal Indian wicket.. to be fair in late n early 90s we did have similar pitches. Only azhar used to win most tosses and opponent teams didnt have Root. Except for Eden which was pace friendly most pitches in India was like this. The advantage India had during those days was the following 3 players could play spin in their sleep in prime.

Azhar

Sidhu

Sachin

And to lesser extent Kambli and More,Nayan Mongia

then Kapil used to come and bash a few for declaration..

plus we had domestic giants like Ajay Sharma, Raman Lamba in reserves who were insane players of spin. Lamba n Sharma would have eaten Lyon Bess Leach with a bat in one hand n tandoori chicken in another. Also Wv Raman. Gone are those days. Skill Levels playing spin has come down in India players. A prime reason is because they dont play domestic anymore. I remember Sachin and Azhar rushing back to Ranji trophy to captain their sides just after defeating NZ in a home test.. think about this in todays context.. hell Ganguly and Sachin competed in the most exciting Ranji final ever in mid 2000s..

Spot on.All Indian players have to play minimum of three Ranji matches every season.

Very impressed with Joe Root's demeanour this series. He has handled the umpiring blunders with maturity and acknowledged his team's shortcomings instead of berating the pitch.

Yes, I don't think the England players have made any excuses

and how do you suggest they do that? When BCCI is prioritising silly bilaterals to make money rather than forcing test players to keep playing first class cricket in the year to hone their skills. We have got to realise that India is 'fairly' good in test cricket is because there is still some interest and BCCI is rich, if they weren't they would have dropped the idea of playing tests and/or giving importance to them.

They have realised that in most cases India will lose abroad and win at home with the current set up so there is point changing status quo giving less attention to IPL.

First of all  bilaterals are not silly at all. They are a must to generate cash to run cricket. It cannot be all about ICC tournaments.  They are trying to change the status quo about test cricket, that is why there are playing day night tests.

There are very few players who play all formats so getting players to play two or three FC games per  home season season should not be hard. Guys like Pujara always plays FC.But the problem is BCCI does not have set calendar for home season. That is limited to just England and Australia.

Guys like Dravid have spoken about having set calendar every year too.

Fringe players getting free ride to test cricket needs to stop.  IPL to me is not an obstacle for FC in Indian cricket. It is a way out for many players to make living out of cricket who cannot make it to Indian team and that is always a good thing.
