'Why was Rishabh Pant told to change his stance': Sunil Gavaskar bemused at umpires' decision during 3rd Test

Quote

"Because I was standing outside the crease and my front-foot was coming into the danger area, so he (the umpire) told me that you can't stand there," Pant had said during the virtual post-day press conference on Wednesday.

It should be reported to match referee and ICC.

And if nothing works, report it to BCCI.

I was too upset to watch the collapse so did not see  Pants innings on live TV so can’t say if it is bizarre or not ….but it might be to prevent causing unevenness in the bowlers follow through area

Pujara, every second ball, was coming down the track when facing a spinner. So now they will prevent him for doing so ?

Might happen today.

Ridiculous. This is why you need neutral umpires. Even Rohit was unlucky to be given out. If decisions like those were given out for England, Joe Root would have been out before 30 in most of his innings in this series.

You can't stand in the danger area. However, as the bowler gets into his delivery stride, you can advance down the wicket as it is considered a part of playing your shot. That is the only situation in which you are allowed to step into the danger area as a batsman. I think Pant was standing so far down that he must have been close to the danger area even as the bowler was running in. Kettleborough is an experienced umpire and from what I saw, I felt he kind of checked where Pant was and just had a word to be careful not to stand near the danger area.

Taking guard near the danger area is obviously not allowed. Think about it  - if that is allowed and if a batsman wants to create some footmarks (say batting team has a healthy lead in 3rd innings and have 2 spinners ready for the upcoming 4th innings), theoretically, batsman can stand on the danger area and quickly move 2 steps back as the bowler runs in. They can keep doing this and can create plenty of footmarks.

Going down the track to attempt to play the ball is completely fine.

Which rule of cricket prevents that?

There is nothing like obviously. Either it's in rulebook or it's not.

MCC law - No. 15 under section 41 which deals with Unfair Play. (https://www.lords.org/mcc/the-laws-of-cricket/unfair-play)

Pasted the relevant section below from the MCC laws website. What is laughable is not that Gavaskar or Manjrekar were not aware of this (to be fair, it was added in 2017 and these sub-standard commentators obviously do zero research) but that someone like Hindustan Times would not do some basic research to clarify the laws before publishing. A simple Google search would have sufficed.

41.15 Striker in protected area

41.15.1 The striker shall not adopt a stance in the protected area or so close to it that frequent encroachment is inevitable.

The striker may mark a guard on the pitch provided that no mark is unreasonably close to the protected area.

41.15.2 If there is breach of any of the conditions in 41.15.1 by the striker, the umpire seeing the contravention shall, if the bowler has not entered his/her delivery stride, immediately call and signal Dead ball, otherwise, he/she shall wait until the ball is dead and then inform the other umpire of the occurrence.

The bowler’s end umpire shall then

- warn the striker that the practice is unfair and indicate that this is a first and final warning. This warning shall apply throughout the innings. The umpire shall so inform the non-striker and each incoming batsman.

- inform the captain of the fielding side and, as soon as practicable, the captain of the batting side of what has occurred.

41.15.3 If there is any further breach of any of the conditions in 41.15.1 by any batsman in that innings, the umpire seeing the contravention shall, if the bowler has not entered his/her delivery stride, immediately call and signal Dead ball, otherwise, he/she shall wait until the ball is dead and then inform the other umpire of the occurrence.

The bowler’s end umpire shall then

- disallow all runs to the batting side

- return any not out batsman to his/her original end

- signal No ball or Wide to the scorers if applicable.

- award 5 Penalty runs to the fielding side.

- award any other 5-run Penalty that is applicable except for Penalty runs under Law 28.3 (Protective helmets belonging to the fielding side).

- inform the captain of the fielding side and, as soon as practicable, the captain of the batting side of the reason for this action.

The umpires together shall report the occurrence as soon as possible after the match to the Executive of the offending side and to any Governing Body responsible for the match, who shall take such action as is considered appropriate against the captain, any other individuals concerned and, if appropriate, the team

Thank you for that.  Helped calm my rising BP.

But one question:  Is there a specific definition of protected area?  Or is it left to the umpire's discretion?  If the latter, then it could hypothetically get messy.

Point of order, cricket has LAWS not rules.  Besmirching the game in your manner will not be tolerated going forward. :two_thumbs_up:

I do not know why any batsman would want to bat near the danger area and create issue for his own team in the first place.

And as many have explained, the rules.

There could be situations in which it is possible. Imagine you have a lead of 400 while batting in the third innings and you are setting up a target. If your team has couple of spinners and if you feel that you have a lot on the board, you may want to create footmarks near protected area. It will help your spinners when they bowl in the 4th innings. It may also impact you in the same innings but you can see why you will accept that risk
