maniac Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 With Kohli stepping down from T20’s and eventually phased out from tests and ODIs, BCCI should think ahead and make Pant the captain in all 3 formats. This the best case scenario Kohli will have the excuse he will focus on his batting for the greater good : amazing PR for him and from a fans perspective, we all know he is a poor captain but a great batsman so, focusing on doing what he does best might be good for the team. BCCI will escape from his fans wrath. Win win for all Rohit: Rohit is the same age as Kohli. Also Rohit is going through a purple patch right now but he is at a age where if form runs out, then it is not going to be easy to come back from that. Why waste this form. Also Rohit can become a sentimental favorite if he says you don’t need to be a captain to give suggestions or something like that in his typical tapori style attitude in press conference and become a sentimental favorite. BCCI can come out and say he volunteered to mentor a young captain and not take that burden once again saving face. BCCI: the guy closest to being a superstar and a braaand as Akthar would say is Pant. He is a keeper who is at the top of his game, extremely popular, non-controversial and humble. Sound familiar? There is only one alternative to Ro and Ko and that is Pant. Ashwin in tests and Bumrah are the other 2 names but Ashwin is a test specialist who doesn’t play in all conditions despite being in the form of his life and also there is not guarantee that Bumrah will be picked for tests in India either. A combo of 2 of Shami, Ishant and Yadav and 3 spinners will bowl out teams 4 times in 5 days in India if required. Hell even put Thakur for batting depth and any other pacer and we will still beat teams black and blue in India. Hence I conclude the best case scenario is make Pant the captain in all 3 formats. speedheat and Sgattick10 1 1
AuxiliA Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 Kohli should remain the test captain at least for a couple of years, maybe beyond that depending on results. Test cricket requires a captain who can intimidate the opposition. Kohli does that really well. Besides he deserves credit for backing the pacers and persisting with 5 bowler strategy no matter what. zen Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 Considering factors such as form in the long term, work load and pressure, Ind probably need different captains for different formats. Ideally, one for each. Minimum 1 for tests and 1 for LOIs.
ShoonyaSifar Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 Perfect scenario for Rohit to be made the all format captain for a short period till 2023 WC. Pant or Rahul can be the VCs and groomed for the job in this period. Kohli may not agree to Rohit being the captain. A young captain will be easier to manipulate for him and his backers. Not possible with Rohit nevada 1
Adamant Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 Both Pant and Rahul haven't really shown any good signs as captains of their ipl sides and I don't think they are the right choice. Rohit should get the captaincy and then after 2023 the decision should be made, I would go with someone other than these two. sarchasm 1
ShoonyaSifar Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 Kohli PR finally seeing the reality. On social m dia while some warriors are still refusing to accept this new reality, have seen many of them say why it's good for him to relinquish captaincy. The shift from bestest captain to make Rohit the new captain has been swift (not even 3 weeks!) sarchasm, Adamant and nevada 1 2
Lone Wolf Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 Pant will have to be groomed as VC first. Also don't forget he needs a good WT20 to enter into a T20 WC Captaincy discussion. Rahul leads him atm.. Also Rahul at no 5 has been spectacular in ODIs.. He has a sealed spot there & looks like now Tests as well. Rahul the braaaand is more lucrative as well.
dilliboy Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 Laughable take.. Pant has only just established himself in all formats, how is it right to put that sort of pressure on a 24 year old already? Make Rohit the white ball captain for a couple of years with Pant/Iyer as the Vc

As a brand Pant will be far bigger than Rahul but I agree, Rahul is definitely ahead in white ball cricket although his captaincy of Punjab leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe if Pant leads DC to victory or something, he'll have a reasonable shout.
Real McCoy Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 kohli is an insecure individual. him being in the team as senior batsman and Pant being captain will only create disaster. anyway he is not giving up his captaincy. so its a moot point
figo6762 Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 Cabinet is bare after kohli and rohit across formats… pant and Kl are probably the only choices…
Adamant Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 I have always maintained that Kohli has been a mediocre LOI captain, so my thoughts regarding his captaincy haven't changed a bit.

This is what wins you cups in shorter format even if it sometimes backfires. That was always the differences between captain Dhoni and captain Kohli, Kohli would never ever bowl Joginder Sharma in last over of a world cup final, Pant probably would (look at the criticism he got for not bowling out Ashwin in matches) Edited September 17, 2021 by New guy

Also, there's no similarity between Dhoni and Pant's personality, I don't know why people are creating parallels between them Edited September 17, 2021 by Adamant
Majestic Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 (edited) Pant is everyone's favourite on this forum so he will be automatic pick for future captain in ICF. However, I think it is too early to consider Pant as captain of all formats. Even in future, if he is playing all three formats, it is not gonna be easy from workload point of view for him to captain in all formats. I think at the moment, Rohit is the best choice and 2-3 years later, we need to sit and decide at that time who can take over as the next captain after Rohit. Edited September 17, 2021 by Majestic
speedheat Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 Captain? Lol, let him first establish himself in the team, there's no way he'll be a guaranteed starter if Kishan outperforms him in the IPL. We also have Rahul, who is a solid wicket keeper, if pant makes same mistakes he did in the England series, we'll be in big trouble. In that case we can easily replace him with an allrounder.
prudent_kreeda Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 BCCI would not behave irrationally. There would be a slow transition one format at a time . First change would be in T20 - with a new captain & vice captain post T20WC. Second change would be 50 overs - This could be little tricky . If Virat hits top form , change could become tricky else, change may happen in a year's team. Test - The last change . However they may appoint someone young say KL,Pant as vice captain within a year.
poyzzplaidwell Posted September 17, 2021 Posted September 17, 2021 Pant plays a high risk game with lot of chances for failure. Very difficult for such a player to be captain in Test and ODIs. T20I still fine i guess.

With any other regular bowler he would have been more cautious and not manufacture shots. Also Joginder's pace is exactly why that ball didnt carry over Sreesanth, which it would have done with any other bowler The only comparison I am drawing, is that Pant doesnt feel the need to follow any template and has the guts to make instinctive decisions, something which has been lacking in our LOI captaincy since Dhoni
