Hardik Pandya mega discussion thread

Pandya has done quite well whenever he got the chance to bat overs like in Australia this year he batted at 6. In T20s, he and pant are two batsmen who can bash spin well unlike likes of Kohli, Rahul. So they are for sure suited in middle overs of 6-16 overs.

I completely disagree .he is not a natural striker nor does he have arsenal of strokes to be consistent at number 4 in any format. Jadeja who is such a limited stroke player has overoverwhemled him innings in same Australia series.

In odis he simply is not good enough. Stop hyping this guy into something he is not.He was useful in shorter formats if he bowled but once his bowling is not there , there are much better options than him. The problem I have with him is he has not evolved into anything. That is why he still remains purely a bits and pieces player.

Pant is not suited for middle order in shorter formats, he should have been made to open in shorter formats.

if anything he has regressed.  Another aspect is highly injury prone. You cannot build a team around him.  Got injured around world cup 2019.  Then again played this world t20 with injury.

If SDP had come in earlier v Pak, who knows Ind could have got to 170+. If SDP had come earlier v NZ, Ind may not have been 48/4 and 70/5, with him playing his natural game with confidence of knowing that Ind has wkts in hand

Nicely sneaking in Afghanistan into stats. Afghanistan is a minnow team.

Injuries, I can understand. But with his frame and bowling action it is always bound to happen. That is why he needed to evolve into a batsman for that to happen he needed to go to back to domestic cricket and improve. Rahul did it.To become a better batsman he had to play FC cricket but he hardly seems to have time for it.

He is done, I don;t think there is anything left of him.He has always been overrrated but had some value now that small value is also gone.

Warner is a prime example of guy who started as pure T20 hack but has evolved in legitmate great opener of this era in all formats. You need to evolve as player.Even after playing international cricket for so long Pandya is still a bits and pieces player.

It's quite a sad state of affairs in Indian cricket when India has to depend on players like Pandya to be an all rounder and get 3-4 overs out of him which he cannot do. Not mentioning the horrendous 10-20 off runs he scores off edges and nicks.

Its disheartening when you realize that at one time, even Sachin and Sehwag were bowling 6-8 overs in an ODI despite scoring centuries and not being all rounders per se but this Hardik guy knows what the expectations from him are and he isn't a batsman and needs to bowl a minimum of 4 overs Ina t20 and expected for 8 to 10 in an ODI he can't.

On the other hand Sachin and Sehwag were ever eager and useful with rolling their arm in any situation and being that extra 6th and 7th option. Oh how has India regressed. And despite being in a much better coaching, nutrition and rehab state that these guys get, its a shame how much these guys take the BCCI for a ride.

And when Pandya is asked to roll his arm in a WC of all places, this fool

forget 6-7: Sachin,Yuvi,Dada,all played as proper 5th bowlers on many occasions. Sachin was actually our 5th bowler in 1992 WC, Dada in England or in India when he opened bowling with Srinath so we could play 4 spinners :laugh1:, Yuvi in 2011 WC etc.

I think even Raina might have played as a proper 5th bowler under MSD in a game.

Sehwag was on bowling ability much superior to all those names above bar Sachin maybe. However he was always 6th bowler because we had presence of most of those names in the combos he played.

look at those names just as multi-dimensional cricketers and not just as batsmen and compare them to the only one we supposedly have now- Hardik Pandya and put that in context. Answer is self explanatory.

My same observation. BCCI was treating him like he was  indispensable.  Finally grew a pair to drop him.  This guy and Jaddu are having time of their lives thanks to one-dimensional nature of bowlers and batsmen.  Jaddu even managed to sideline India's no.1 spinner. If Pandya had been half fit he probably would have played at the expense of Thakur in Tests. Imagine that plight.

You cannot blame Jadeja and Pandya taking advantage of one dimesional team.Ashwin would be lead spinner if played for any other team even England in England. You have pity the TM/captain for getting stuck with one dimesional team.

What goes to determine a player's selection in the national side is a combination of   -  Performance + Skill + Attitude

Attitude is very underrated.

HP has shown himself to be no better than Afridi with the bat. A hack who will have a good day once in a while. Afridi has won several matches ( including test match) with the bat against India for his country - but that said more about India's subpar bowling than his batting ability.

Then why do I say -VERY POOR MAN'S Shahid Afridi  ?

Thats because Afridi was a full time bowler in LOIs and part time hack with the bat.

HP's bowling is unreliable and he does not have the skills of proper batsman - he knows how to play only one way and is mighty unreliable with the bat too.

Finally, Afridi displayed animal like vigor and aggression to win for his country. As brainless and showboatsy that he was, he did have a great intensity and hunger to win  on the field - often at all costs.

Compare that to Pandya's attitude. Does anyone see  intensity in his body language or a fierce desire to win ? Or a willingness to put a high price on his wicket and determination to win games for India. ZILCH.

He comes across as someone who just wants to do enough to have a place in the side so as to sustain his extravagant smuggler like lifestyle.

I challenge anyone to show me instances even off the field where Pandya expressed deep commitment to fulfilling a role for India with great success.

There is a TON of talent in India - we need to give chances to HUNGRY AND HIGHLY DRIVEN players. And HP is anything but that. He even lacks basic professionalism in his conduct and mannerisms as someone who represents / represented  the national side.

With Pandya excluded from the T20 squad against NZ at home and even all the murmurs about him not likely retained by Mumbai Indians - even those who have supported him have apparently had enough of his conduct and attitude.

With Dravid as Head Coach now, this disgraceful attitude will not fly at all.  I have a strong hunch, we have seen about the last of him in India colors. And thank god for that.

Afridi is actually a pioneering high strike rate T20 player. Had a SR of 150 or something during his time. If SDP is an inferior Afridi, it says a lot about other Indian players, who are much poorer than SDP.

Afridi was MoM in 2009 F as well iirc … If we have players like both Afridi and SDP in our line up, Ind would be unstoppable in knockouts

SDP = best T20 high strike rate batsmen that Ind has produced so far

When batsmen score less than 50, which is most of the time (off the blocks quickly in most innings) ... Bat SDP in top 3-4 where he has opportunity to get big scores and watch his SR soar even further
