Takeaways from the series

Recommended Posts

I think I can speak for all of us when o say that the squad had us excited and team did alright to come back from 2 games down and defend totals. But by the end I think for many reasons it is fair to say that what we expected was far removed from what we got.

Pros

1. Kishan probably was the young batsman who performed best and i feel he may feel more settled and secure now in the squad

2. Karthik showing that age is no bar for quality and those who perform super specialised roles.

3. Pandya also looked relaxed and played a good innings or 2. A much better captaincy option than Pant or Rahul after the ipl win.

Cons

1. Obvious one. No rotation despite the size of the squad selected which is just plainly a missed opportunity. Not expected of Dravid when we wanted him as the coach. It seems as though current tm puts winning meaningless bilaterals over getting the combinations right, enhancing squad depth and making changes to how we approach games. Kind of conservatism I, at least, was hoping we would not see.

2. Pant and Iyer not impressing. Formers form is a concern atm though maybe responsibility of captaincy didn't help matters.

3. None of Bhuvi, harshal, Avesh and the spinners really impressed despite the pitches suiting our attack. Attack is reflective of TMs thinking which is reactive and defensive rather than focussed on trying to take wickets. No bankable leggie atm marks us out from other teams who all have at least 1. Arshdeep is also a similar but gives us a left arm angle which we lost after Nattus injury. We dropped the ball by not giving Umran a single game.

4. Ruturaj Gaekwad got to play all games but didn't convince anyone that he deserves a look in when the others return. He will only find a way back into the team after others are moved on and he cements his spot in some other format of the game for us.

Guys like Hooda and V. Iyer deserved chances for a team which lacks clean strikers of the ball, despite their limitations.

the quality of pitches weren't great either considering we are planning for the T20 wc and also what we had for the ipl which were quite good. Feel free to add any more.

I believe there is not too much to gain from these series because conditions in Australia will be vastly different.

Batters:
-Ishan Kishan got runs but only against spinners. Don't think he will have much impact in Aus.

-Gaikwad was hit and miss.

-Iyer got exposed against rapid pace.
-Pant was horrible.
-Only positive were Hardik and DK as finishers.

Allrounder:
- Axar was tried for 5 games but was harmless.

Spinners:
- Yuzi established himself as No.1 spinner so he is a sureshot now.

Pacers:
-Bhuvi was exceptional. The zip and swing was back. But again question mark on his viability in Aus.
-Harshal was decent but will his cutters work in Aus ?
- Avesh was trash and picked some cheap wickets.

Overall still has more questions than answers.

Our 16 man team is ready now. TM has made it clear and concise barring one or two options which depends on injury.

Openers :-

Rohit

Rahul

Kishan

Middle order :-

Kohli

SKY

Pandya

DK

Pant

Spinners :

Yuzi

Kuldeep( he needs to be fit to grab his chance)

Jadeja

Fast/Medium Fast bowlers :

Bumrah

Shami

Bhuvi

Harshal

D Chahar ( not sure where he is)

Now that Deepak Chahar spot is open because he will need to get fit and then back with performance. Rest of the guys like Umran, Avesh, Arshdeep, Natrajan, Prasidh can go to Australia only for that open spot.  Problem with them is that the SA series is over and they haven't been tried vs them. Against England, the full strength will be back so not very likely to get a go there. Ireland is not really a benchmark irrespective of whoever gets a chance.

shami has not been given a single series whereas avesh has been given a run so shami has a veery very low chance

He is rested, I think. England LOI series will tell us where he stands but I am sure they will give him a go before finalizing the squad.

He is dropped , if it was rest he still wud have played any series in last 6-7.  Even bumrah played SL series and others like Rohit, kohli, Ashwin have all played series in between. Clearly he is not in t20 plans anymore

Okay then two spots are open. Bumrah, Bhuvi and Harshal will most likely go.

Shami and Deepak Chahar spots are open. That can go to any two pacer, a pacer and a spinner or even a pacer and a batting all rounder (like Hooda/V Iyer).

my guess is

Deepak will go as a backup to Bhuvi

Harshal is already there who can do death over role incase something happens to bumrah

That makes it 4 seamer , one more which i think will be a shot between - Avesh , Umran, Arshdeep or any leftie like Khaleel, Mohsin, Nattu (if team decided they want a leftie)

Since we hve Ireland, Zimbwabe series coming Umran has a chance to bully them

Also a lot wud depend on whom Rohit likes

Kishan has surely shown he is capable enough for Int'l cricket.  The more he plays he will get better.  He is moving a bit better in the crease.  My theory is his cross batted shots could suit him in Australia.

DK obviously biggest gain.

Hardik has tried to get back his hitting ability vs spin which he had lost.  Confidence was never an issue.  His biggest test is when bowlers bowl at hard length.

Boovi..  Swing was seen but we have seen this film before & then usual failure in ICC tournament.  He needs to be constantly put under pressure to perform. Keep him out of ODIs for that.

Rest same old....  Harshal u can never bank on him in Australia bit like Chahal who is very very inconsistent.  Fails in like 10 matches before performing.

Disappointed with no debut to either Umran or Arshdeep

I hope this series Takes Away Pant the T20 player from Indian Team for good. Hope that Harshal Patel is not backed and taken to Australia.

Hope that Shreyas Iyer is taken away from us for eternity in the LOI format.

Only positive is Dinesh Karthiks resurgence. Rest there's nothing to write home about.

Kishan smashed Jansen around in A tour back in s.africa which is as bouncy as Australia. But this is t20 not tests. If he is forced to attack I am not sure how he will fare.

No major takeaways ... Most of what we saw in the series was observed in the IPL:

Positives (from IPL)

  • Hardik & DK are batting well where one feels that Ind is in the game as long as they are at the crease
  • Yuzi is bowling well as far as looking for wkts is concerned

Other (also from IPL)

  • Ritu was inconsistent in IPL, which continued here
  • Kishan & S I Iyer do well on such pitches esp. when they bat in the top 3, taking advantage of spinners
  • Bhuvi, Harshal, & Avesh did reasonable well in IPL too so continued that in familiar conditions in the series

Negatives, the key issue here

  • Team displayed no planning relying on playing an 11 that provided the captain with buffet options (rather than conditions focused) so if the pitch turns, you have two spinners, if it does not, you have others
  • Identified 11 players who were played (irrespective of form or conditions) to bank on the law of averages
  • Hooda, who is more talented when it comes to playing both pace & bounce, & at various batting positions than a Kishan or a S Iyer, along with having the ability to slip in an over, was ignored
  • Umran, who brings X-Factor was not tried against a relatively strong team (SA too was without Markham, while QdK & Rabada missed some games too) at home

Also very happy with dravid giving players a fair run n have securing team enviorment. Even though some players were not to my liking but who ever gets a chance shud get fair one , we have all seen what kohli-shastri insecure enviorment led.

Biggest takeaway wud be that TM wud be great for players development

Only real positive was DK reaffirming his class as a finisher in this format. For a team like India which is yet to crack the T20 batting code having a player like him is a big positive.

SKY, Pandya, DK looks like a good MO. Need one more option, who could that be? Haven't watched much cricket in last one year, so dunno about Hooda.
