Persistent rain that denied England a Twenty20 clean sweep of Australia is likely to be an unwelcome feature of the upcoming World Cup, with the lack of reserve days a concern before a ball is even bowled.

Australia is experiencing its third consecutive year of La Nina - an atmospheric phenomenon which brings higher levels of rainfall, and one that threatens to turn the tournament into something of a lottery.

Jos Buttler's team were well placed to complete a 3-0 series win over the hosts when wet weather had the decisive say in Canberra on Friday night.

 

And with scattered showers forecast across Victoria over the coming days, games in a qualifying phase that includes former champions West Indies and Sri Lanka are under threat of becoming reduced-overs affairs or being scrubbed altogether.

 

Privately, the ICC will be fretting about teams prospering due to the misfortune of others after England were eliminated in 2020's women's event down under when a semi-final washout saw India go through by virtue of being group winners.

A consequence of that farce is that the semi-finals and final of this competition have reserve days but that is not the case for the round-robin matches, increasing the likelihood of no-results influencing progress to both the Super 12 and last-four stages.

The effects of La Nina are expected to last until the end of 2022, meaning that pitches might be greener and softer than archetypal Australian ones, and contests become more bowler-oriented.

WC should be scheduled based on the country & its weather. Its just ridiculous that a marquee tournament that generates millions in dollar in revenues can't find a time in calendar year that isn't affected by weather.

1992 in Aus was impacted by weather too. Worked for Pak and against SA that time.

I hate these rain curtailed 9-12 over matches. Gives a huge advantage to teams chasing. There should be a washout or a full game on Sunday.Anything in between and its Toss Jeeto Match Jeeto again..

It's common knowledge that early summers in Australia are always wet but still they went ahead and scheduled it there like idiots. Same with having the bulk of the 2019 world Cup in June.

Problem is host countries don't want to compromise with their home season. Australian season of December to Jan. Same case with England.
