Is Ashwin's 6-91 best bowling performance ever on flat pitch?

No, but it was a damn good effort. Lots of hard work here, bowling 47 overs on this patta and not losing his mind....conceded just 90 runs despite bowling a huge chunk of overs for 5.5 sessions under the hot sun. Respect.

The way he bowled in BD on flatter tracks, I thought he had no chance. Credit where its due, great effort by him. Was still bowling too full at times though.

Also usually in high scoring matches , most 5 wicket hauls are because the batsmen slog and get out in the end. But all of Ashwin’s wicket were good balls, except Cameron Green maybe.

No, in terms of impact. His first two wkts of the top 6 batsmen were relatively lucky where Head mistimed a shot and Green played a loose stroke to glove a catch on the leg side. At that point, Aus was already 378/5.

Then Ashwin picked up Carey, Starc, Lyon, & Murphy (to become more or less a stats padding exercise).

Pitch had absolutely 0 to offer.

You must've missed the thousand or so other tests which had similar flat surfaces to begin with, he did bowl well but even for your CB titles this is a bit OTT :cantstop:

Those were better performances. This is best? :P

Spinners bowled well, even Axar. Really kept a stranglehold over them. Jaddu was not at his best but still an er of 2.5.

Both the quicks were off colour, just look at their first spell yesterday. Going for almost 250 runs at 4.2-4.3 per over on this pitch is unpardonable.

How many of his performances like this has come on a flatter deck?

I mostly remember him picking wickets on turning pitches only. In Rajkot 2016 vs England, Ranchi drawn test 2017 vs Australia and Chennai 2021 vs England, he was awful on first three days of the pitch.

It was okay spell. Top order wickets were mostly rash shots, Green was lucky wicket, lower order did their part and got out. He has bowled better than this in past. This is the problem with Indian fans , glorifying not so great performances..

Why is there so much divisiveness on Ashwin?

The guy is one of the most important cricketers to play for India last decade.

He is a fantastic cricketer and a modern ATG. End of story.

Jadeja I can understand as I myself for many years was turned off by his initial limited overs exploits and him running out Sachin and Pandya at crunch times.Ironically  no Indian has probably run out more people in the field than Jadeja himself.

And Dhoni shoving him down our throat didn’t help.

Anyways the dislike masked some of his important contributions throughout the years. However what a great cricketer too. One of the best athletes produced by Indian cricket.

Basically there should be no debate these 2 are ATG cricketers.

there are 3 kinds of people who hate them

1.people who don’t like Indian team/anti-nationals

2.due to some regional/racial or any kind of personal prejudice

3. you have convinced yourself you are Einstein and no one can ever make you think otherwise.

which one are you?

on topic it was a good bowling effort  but not ATG by any means. I think the thread is a reaction from such above trolling. That’s about it.

In terms of relevance, this performance could play a key factor because if not for Ashwin's wickets, Australia were eyeing for a 550+ total and that would have buried any chance of India's win and even a draw would have been a real tough deal because we have seen that a lot of batting lineup gets crumbled under scoreboard pressure and it could easily become a Chennai 2021 type scenario for India.

Good post especially about Jaddu's perception.

However I refuse to believe that Pandya runout came at a crucial point. We still lost by 180+ runs and Pak had started bowling part timers. He could have got a century but match was done.

Chennai 2021 he had Nadeem for company. That made difference too. I think he bowled well there too but there was nothing from other end.

Accuracy trumps skills on flat pitches. Ability to hit the same length for long periods will reward you.  Ashwin himself has admitted he is not a long-spell guy has high praise for Jadeja's ability to hit the same length in lengthy spells. Your bowling is likely to have some detrioration when you bowl longer spells. Some don't mind bowling long spells. Kumble is one. Sometimes you don't have to do anything. Wickets will automatically come.

40 plus overs in an innings

Kumble  50 innings 166 wickets  35.92 avge  12 fifers   84.5 SR

Bedi       31 innings   97 wickets   32.55 avge 7 fifers      96.7 SR

Bhajji      28 innings    95 wickets 38.44 avge  9 fifers   79.7 SR

Mankad  28 innings    86 wickets  37.10 avge 6 fifers  106.5 SR

Chandra  17 innings   69 wickets   26.92 avge 7 fifers   66.5 SR

Ashwin    21 innings   67 wickets   40.14 avge   6 fifers 87.7 SR

Jadeja      10 innings   30 wickets    36.83 avge  2 fifers  94.5 SR

Even Murali averages 30.5 Shane warne averages 31.33 when they bowl 40 plus overs.

Looke like  Chandrasekar, Richi Benaud, Tayfield, Grimmett, Qadir, Gupte have sub 30 averages when they bowl 40 overs. Apart from Tayfield all the others are leggies. Not sure what to make of it. Seems like Leggies are more effective when they bowl longer spells.
