Change my mind. It was always obvious and ruined our balance in 2023 wc too after his injury. People will talk about Shami, Kohli, Hitman etc but this guy gives us what no one else can andis a more accurate bowler than the likes of Prasidh and Rana.

Fit Pandya is the number one name on my team sheet in ODIs, T20Is. Ahead of even Bumrah. 

 

The balance he gives us goes beyond stats. And a brilliant fielder as well, in this team of sloths. 

 

Rare clutch Indian cricketer as well.

Post 2011 era, if I have to rank the top 5 Indian white ball cricketers.

 

1. Kohli

2. Bumrah

3. Rohit (poor in T20Is except 2024)

4. Pandya

5. Shami (T20 drags him down, as an ODI player probably will give Kohli stiff competition)

 

Even Dhawan comes only after these guys.

Pandya bowling 135-140ish is worth its weight in gold.

But currently he is bowling in early 130's at best as we saw in Asia Cup.

 

Nevertheless there is no replacement of him waiting in the wings either.

Pandya is unfitting himself deliberately in midst of tournaments only to show his worth by winning the CWC 27 singlehandedly for us by rising again from an injury early in the tournament

To be honest on the field he is always intense. Never casual.  The tapori (I don’t to use the c word) attitude/lifestyle might give that impression. 
 

fitness, I don’t think his body can take the load of being a middle order bat, bowling 135+ and being the core fielder over a long period of time given how much cricket happens. IPL is easily 2 months, give or take 3 months including preparation, recovery. On top of that every year there is some world tournament- worldcup, Asia cup, CT etc etc which is another month or 2. It’s very hard on athletes. Think about Bumrah who plays all 3 formats + IPL and is expected to be at his peak every game.

He is an important player in LOIs but not necessarily an MPV. I would not loose sleep over him not playing unless he is both fit and in top form.

More than his absolute quality in any one suit it's the balance he brings to the team.

He brings balance to the team but he is not MVP even in t20s. Compared to jokers who are masquerading as allrounders this guy is lot better.

Pandya brings so much balance to the team that he inadvertently hides the chinks as well. Remember Pandya went out injured in group stage of wc23 and we brought in Shami who should have originally played in place of siraj.

Team management assumed the trio of Bumrah Siraj and Pandya to be good enough only to realize the value of Shami until Pandya was gone. Likewise with the finisher and all the drama with KLR & SKY.
