I wouldn't mind if he continue a little longer, provided Dhoni steps down from his captaincy. I think he did a pretty good job in our Test series wins against Srilanka and SA, with Kohli.

More than teach someone how to bat or bowl, we need someone who can read the conditions and situation properly, strategize effectively and motivate the players to take on challenges. Besides the names already mentioned on this thread, some of such candidates include:

 

• Nasser Hussain - known to be a good captain for Eng. He was not sure about Ind in 2011 WC but since then appears to be smitten by Ind's success. He is also one of those players who worked hard to be competitive 
• Shane Warne - brings in attacking style of cricket 
• Adam Gilchrist - his captaincy was usually impressive 
• Sehwag - I liked his captaincy. Always thought that he could have captained Ind in Tests. Used to make the right moves such as playing with a leg spinner, etc.

Do watever Have a fast bowling coach its a must- Zaheer khan, Gillespie, Bond . But its a must

 

Also in terms of batting coach have someone who cud help our batsman playing against spin bowling. 

 

Would like to have Ravi shastri in some capacity as he has done a gud job . 

 

We Shud also Have a team dir like Kumble who cud see the whole development , Strauss appointment has helped England team come long in short format. 

 

Warne has expressed his desire, he cud be an intersting option. He is a gr8 motivator and also has a very attacking mindset.

Good for the team but Shastri will be back in the comm box to annoy us now.  

We'll need a contemporary bowling coach in addition to a head coach. Someone like Bond/Lee/Donald. 
But all three look unavailable. Bond wouldn't want a full time coaching commitment, Lee just started as a commentator and looks happy in that role. Donald could be available but not sure. 

Partnership of Warne as the head coach and Kohli will be awesome. lol
Actually Warne did a pretty good job as a mentor with Rajasthan Royals.

Still can't forget that this guy fought with selectors to have Suresh Raina in the Test team for Australia. Even Suresh Raina knew that he was no good for Test cricket at that time. Better to have somebody like Dravid coach the team, but then Dravid is probably more useful coaching the young teams that he is doing now and helping them make that next step forward. 

 

IMO, here's what I'd want a coach to do:

 

1. Get bowlers to be able to bat at least a little. Don't want to see numbers 9,10,11 just back away outside leg stump leaving all 3 stumps visible to the bowler and let him pick which stump to uproot. If our tailenders can bat at least half as good as Aussie tailenders, we will be able to at least win some close matches/ draw some more Tests. 

 

2. Get batsmen to bowl some medium pace. At the moment, most of our batsmen just prefer bowling part time offspin. Even if our batsmen bowled a little like Ponting, Steve Waugh, Hayden, Stiaan van Zyl did/do, it will help get some crucial breakthroughs. 

 

3. Make unfit players work hard to earn a place in the team. 

 

Results of course help. But here are the basics that I would expect from the coach. We should have metrics in place to judge the coach on the above points and review his performance every year. 

 

Otherwise, the coach is just a gloried ball thrower for catching practice, an exorbitantly expensive one at that.
