Virat Kohli should look himself in mirror: Sunil Gavaskar slams off-colour star

Virat Kohli is the darling of Indian cricket fans. His elegant strokes and envious records have made the India captain a champion. But something different is happening at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017.

Kohli’s team Royal Challengers Bangalore is on a five-match losing streak and the captain has not been able to inspire his team to a win, scoring above 20 only once in those five games.

The 28-year-old again failed to perform on Friday, as his team slumped to a 19-run loss to Kings XI Punjab, despite having to chase a lowly score of 138/6. Kohli was out for 6 as RCB were dismissed for 119.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar is irked at Kohli’s show in the past few matches. More than his failure to score big, Gavaskar is irritated at the way the talented Kohli hs been getting out.

“First thing he should be doing is look himself in the mirror. The shot he played (against KXIP) wasn’t exactly a great shot. The shot he played at Eden Gardens (against KKR) wasn’t a great shot,” Gavaskar said in the post-match analysis of the RCB-KXIP match for the official broadcaster.

Against KXIP, he charged down against Sandeep Sharma and swung the bat hard. He missed the inswinger completely and was bowled. Against Kolkata Knight Riders, on April 23, the RCB captain was out for a duck.

In the third ball of a 131-run chase, Kohli went for a wild drive against Nathan Coulter-Nile and was caught by Manish Pandey in the second slip.

Gavaskar said that Kohli should bat with more responsibility, considering he is the captain a team that is not doing well in the IPL.

“He (Kohli) has got to say to himself that he is the captain. He has got to stay there. He is not in form so stay there and he should work himself with proper cricketing shots then widen the scope of the shots,” Gavaskar said.

The Kohli-led RCB have five points from 12 matches and are out of contention for as play-off berth in the 2017 edition.

This is in sharp contrast to the 2016 edition when Kohli scored four centuries to take his team into the final. He missed the early part of the 2017 edition with a shoulder injury. Though he scored three half-centuries after coming back, it has not been able to lift the spirits of RCB this season.

Gavaskar also criticised the way other RCB batsmen got out in the KXIP match.

“Apart from (Chris) Gayle, who was deceived by late movement, Virat (Kohli) went for that big six shot, AB de Villiers went for that big six shot, Mandeep Singh, having settled down, went for the big shot. So, there you are,” he said.

“Your main batsmen went for the glamour shots instead of looking to play proper cricketing shots. Get the boundary. Between a four and a six the difference is two runs. Because you hit the ball in the air (for six), the risk percentage goes up to a 100.”

Gavaskar with unwanted hard words, t20 is a quick format n it doesnt give time to cmeback most times unlike test cricket. Its about momentum n confidence which rcb has lost

Last yr he used harsh words for dhoni for not playing pathan without knwing how **** pathan is

Havent seen him using such words for his loveable mumbaikars rahane n rohit

T20 can make a hero or zero out of even good players. If those shots had fetched boundaries the same commentators would have called it positive, aggressive batting.

Gavaskar is someone I admire a great deal and I don't want to use harsh words against him. But it is a well known fact that he has a strong pro Mumbai bias and a dislike for Delhi/North players. He has had issues with Bedi/Kapil in the past and has mocked the likes of Sehwag/Gambo/Dhawan in recent times. At least twice in the last 2 years I have seen him mock the so called Delhi school of batting on air. He is being petty here, I dare him to use such language against Rahane and Rohit who have been useless in recent times. Perhaps he is afraid that Kohli has started closing in on Sachin's records and is already a greater test captain than any Mumbaikar of past.

Don't be so jelly Sunny bhai, we non Marathis love SRT as much as Kohli and you as much as Kapil. We don't do bhed-bhav like folks sitting in Mumbai. Come to Delhi/Kolkata/Hyderabad/Bengaluru and we will welcome you with open hearts unlike the typical Shiv Sena thugs of Mumbai who have nothing but contempt for people from other states esp UP, Bihar, Delhi.

I wanted to write eff you or some bad language but I respect you so much. So a simple thumbs down will do.

Gavaskar talking too much. It is T20 only and whole team is struggling so easy to say when someone is down and out, which clearly Kohli and co are at this time. Same can be said for ABD but it will be considered "CHEAP" if we say the same about ABD because he is from overseas but we should say the same about an Indian ODI great?

May be many here and Sir Gavaskar need to look in front of the mirror.

Never take Gavaskar seriously. the guy is as one eyed as they come. If he had his way he would have preferred likes of Wasim Jaffer and Amol Mazumdar in Indian team ahead of Sehwag, and would continue to have Rahane in every team.

All Kohli needs is a decent break as his head isn't there anymore since the Aussie series. The guy has been playing non-stop for nearly 2 years and deserves a rest. Wish BCCI had some balls and some folks who really cared about Indian cricket and they could've asked Kohli to take a break of a few weeks before the CT.

Virat Kohli has certainly been ordinary captain in IPL,no one can deny that fact.Earlier it was all about he cannot do anything in Chinnaswamy because its so toss dependent but this year pitches were different and he still did zilch. He has no plan whatsoever when he is on the field it seems ,randomly giving overs to bowlers. And he can learn a thing or two from Rohit , who even when some of his players failed didn't drop them and gave them a solid run unlike Virat who has changed team at the drop of hat.

What also hasnt helped him is having a dud like Vettori as coach, why is he coach in the first place is beyond me?

Virat looks tactically mediocre, with Virat its all about scoring runs like last year and  hope for the best to transpire.Signs of an ordinary limited overs captain.
