Do India have the bowling resources for successful 2018 overseas campaign and remain No.1?

So much focus has been on batting, but I think bowling will be the key to a successful overseas campaign, and if you look beyond Shami and Bhuvi, there is anything much in the tank.

For example look at Australia 2000s side

I am not saying be like the great Australian side of 2000, but it's good indicator how their premier bowlers were backed up by decent bowlers with an assortment of part time bowlers.

Australia at it's peak (1997 to 2007) had the following:

Spinners: Warne, MacGill, Hogg, Mark Waugh, Symmonds

Pace: McGrath, Gillespie, B Lee, Bichel, S Clark, Kasprowicz, Fleming, Bracken, Steve Waugh, Miller, Blewett

India with confidence can say have the following:

Spinners: Ashwin, Jadeja, Kuldeep, J Yadav
Pace: Shami, Bhuvi, Yadav, Ishant, Pandya

One can easily see if at least two of the quicks (especially one of Shami or Bhuvi) get injured there is not much too choose from.

It's a shame in the last 2 years of so many home games, in dead rubber Test games, India didn't try any newbie quick, even in the game vs Bangla, three quicks played, Bhuvi, Ishan, Yadav :lol:

Selectors, management and Kohli missed a trick not developing a decent cohort of bowlers, especially quick bowlers, and injuries has always haunted Indian quicks touring abroad.

Do India have the bowling resources to launch a successful period to remain No.1 and be successful overseas and at home?

Need to make sure that Shami and Bhuvi aren't overused to avoid injuries.

And India doesn't need to win all 3 series. If they win 1 of the 3, they can probably get maintain their top position since once they are home, we know that no team has a chance in hell against them.

I would like a bowling line up like this in conditions where spinners will take the back seat:

* 3 specialist seamers

* Pandya

* In form Spinner preferably Kuldeep

Then you have 5 in form batsmen + a good Wk bat, allowing the team to attack both with the bat and the ball. A good bowling attack also takes the pressure off batsmen to score big consistently. A 350 all out can be seen as competitive on a sporting wkt

We should be more worried about the slip catchers. Bowlers are in the range of above average to semi decent range in overseas conditions. IMO Shami, bhuvi, ishant, pandya, jadeja + ashwin, bumrah are adequate to win the saffer series.

This.

We need to become cricket's version of Nadal. All we need to do in the upcoming overseas assignments (SA, Eng, Aus,NZ) is one win, two draws and one narrow loss. Then once we are Asia or WI we should strive to be ruthless like we were in this cycle. We can never be dislodged from no 1 if we apply that formula. And let us be very clear we aren't as good as 70s/80s WI or 90s/2000s Australia..those teams were absolute freak teams and probably we may never see such teams for the next 100 years. We need to be very smart and understand our limitations, esp on the bowling front (+catching :(().

If we can say lose to SA 0-2 in a hotly contested series, win in England 2-1 and draw in Australia and NZ only to smash them when they tour here even haters can't dispute our ranking. Come on, Nadal is a GOAT contender with 60-70% of his titles on clay, why can't we take that route?

why not play spin quartet of Ashwin, Jaddu, Cooldeep, and Chahal.

That is too much. I do know what you did their. They play pace all the time and we may not have any advantage. The key to winning any game is to create a mismatch and exploit it. That was my reasoning. As a minimum of two spinners atleast to gain any advantage.

The are good players of spin if ball is turning square, so, that negates the advantage.

They do not see the quality spin that India can deliver. Spin is a huge advantage for India pace is a wash.

At best we might get draws in SA and Aus if we play well.

In Eng we still havent mastered the swinging ball ( IDK how much of help Pujara will be after his county stint) but as no other batsman was anywhere near as good on the last tour, we will gift this tour to overrated England swing bowlers only because we wont have acclimatised to the conditions in time.

NZ is a hit an miss. 60:40% probability of a loss to a win
