One great quality Dhoni still has is tries to form partnership whenever he comes. But with waning abilities he has become so insipid at getting going that he comes across as selfish trying not to get out , instead of making the play.

Not convinced this is a resurgence. Once knock after 18 months does not prove anything, Even here when required rate was 9+, he was going at a strike rate of 60 and Kohli the set batsman had to take lot of risks and ultimately got out.

 

Now that it's pretty much confirmed he will play in WC, best for us to play him as a specialist batsman at number 4, DK/Jadhav at 5 and Pant can come in as keeper at 6.

Not entirely convinced if this is a resurgence, looked more like an outlier.

 

When Doni came in, we needed 139 runs in 116 deliveries. Kohli was on 53*(68). As always, Dhoni started to tuk tuk and the set batsman had to take risks, in next 11 overs Dhoni was stonewalling at 17*(29)  while Virat had raced to 100 in 107 deliveries. Imagine if Kohli had got out earlier taking risks due to Dhoni's tuk tuk innings. Thanks to Dk, we crossed the line else this tuk tuk approach would lose us 9 out of 10 matches, as happened a lot of times in last 3-4 years.

 

BTW 40.2, with Dhoni at 12*(24), there was a lucky escape due to the fielder being slow, else it would have ended in the similar fashion - Dhoni comes in , does tuk tuk, puts pressure on others and gets out.

This is definitely improvement over 2018 where he could not hit any 50 and hit only 2 sixes entire year. He has already surpassed that tally this year.

You could say that bowling quality is not of the highest level but Rayudu has done much worse than him. I would not go overboard calling this the second coming of Dhoni.

 

Bigger point is that whether we like it or not he is going to play World Cup so lets just hope he can bring some value to the team.

Anyone who has followed Dhoni's entier career would know this guy is not even 10% as good as he used to be.  10% of Peak Dhoni? Do we want someone like that? No. Apparently not. He can scratch around and stay at the crease. But he needs other to do the actual job of accelerating. His keeping is shoddy these days. Stumping alone is not the job of keeper.  I have zero hopes of him pulling off any magical win for India.

I will take Dhoni as captain of our odi team ahead of selection of any other guy in that team. A100% committed to win Dhoni will win us any series
