Clearly the contract is a signal otherwise BCCI would have no issue extending it for 1 more year. Dropping a player and then selecting him on retainer seems very unlikely. Retainers are for young players who get selected for the first time, in between a year

Dhoni is above central contracts. That’s a sad fact. 
 

Third eye says he will still play atleast 1 farewell match atleast T20. 
 

His last odi game in India was in Ranchi so I am assuming he will play 1 last t20 match either in Ranchi or Chennai. Also with the TM + Captain there is an outside chance he will sneak in WT20 as well.

If I were in BCCI, I would definitely advertise a farewell match for Dhoni. Not because I think it is fair but it will make a lot of money especially in a place like Chennai were Rajnikant movie tickets are sold and bought for a lakh of rupees in black on first day. It would be a money spinner.

 

We have some idiots out there who keep cheering/chanting  Dhoni Dhoni or Mahi Mahi or we want sixer while Thala is lunging away to his hearts content.
