OpeningBatsman Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Thakur's performance has impressed former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody, who called Thakur an ‘exciting package’, believing the 29-year-old quick could be a crucial part of India’s ODI setup going forward. “Thakur bowled really well. He provides a point of difference to that side which I quite like. I know that Saini played the first couple of games and they’re sort of earmarking him for the Test matches, but I think Thakur provides a real good point of difference in ODI cricket,” Moody said on ESPNCricinfo. https://m.hindustantimes.com/cricket/india-vs-australia-he-has-many-ways-to-get-wickets-tom-moody-believes-29-year-old-india-fast-bowler-is-an-exciting-package/story-lzBiXzHVACQHmUbim35gtL_amp.html sorak, rollingstoned, raki05 and 1 other 1 2 1

rkt.india Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 (edited) Any bowler who can bowl good outswingers to right-handers like Thakur did in last game at decent pace 135-138 isnt a bad reserve. Only if he could have a bit more gas to use when needed. Edited December 3, 2020 by rkt.india
rkt.india Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 I think he can be a good option in England for tests

Most of our bowlers are inswingers, very few proper outswingers. Kuldeep Sen is one tall, quick and bowls outswingers. He should be in radar instead of his team mate Avesh Khan. sandeep Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 (edited) Thakur can be sort of like an Andy Bichel for this team. A squad player, who may not be top class, but an experienced professional who is good enough to step in as a replacement and contribute competently. Of course Bichel was playing that role for a stacked team that was best in class already, Thakur is playing for a structurally flawed team led by a less-than-adequaate Kuptaan. maniac Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 (edited) Thakur will have a Botham like allround series if he plays in England. Laugh at me for that but also please bookmark this statement so that later you don’t accuse me of jumping on bandwagons or lying. The Realist Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 He's nearly 30. Where has he been for the rest of his career? Late developer? Overlooked?

He was top Ranji wicket taker in 2016 IIRC, did well in 2015 too, back then India weren't doing as many 'A' tours, finally made it through as the 'next man up' a couple of years later, but has been hit or miss since. tweaker 1

I heard his name on ICF long ago, back when Zak was still playing. Too bad the selectors don't have similar enthusiasm in identifying new talent.

His issue is that, he hits the sweet spot of the bat on normal tracks and gets hit ( this Canberra track had above average bounce and this helped him and all other pacers too ). Shardul bowls with sufficient pace for a taller bowler ... is aggressive in his approach ... has a decent outswinger ... but he is not quick enough for his height and accuracy combo. These days we see a lot of discussions on ICF about the adequacy of 135 k type speed ... but whether it is adequate or not depends a lot on the height/ bounce and accuracy combo of a pacer. Ishant Sharma of 2018 to 2020 has the height and accuracy to succeed at 135 k in test matches ( he is not a LOI bowler though ) But if Shardul has to succeed with his very short height, he needs to become more accurate than he is now and increase his pace and bounce too. The good things recently observable from Shardul is he has developed quite a few types of slower balls ... but that alone won't work in the longer run if he keeps hitting the sweet spot of the bat with his stock deliveries.
