Natarajan will return home only after the Tests and get to see his daughter for the first time. And there is the captain (Virat Kohli) going back after the 1st Test for the birth of his first child" : Sunil Gavaskar

Different rule? Does Gavaskar know that TN applied paternity leave and it was rejected? May be he didn't because why will he let go of an opportunity to play for India?

Natarajan isn't in test squad, he was instructed to stay there after the T20 series to be a net bowler for the side.

There is enough to criticize about VK.  Going home to see his child being born is not one of those things.

It is very true that one cannot criticize someone for taking paternity leave.

However, in the case of Kohli, some people are coming out with criticism because Kohli himself has said multiple times how he puts his cricket before his family. He did not go to see his just expired father because he was playing a Ranji game.

While saying this, he takes a very morally superior attitude in interviews. It may not go down well with many ex-players.

Dunno. As a junior from some tiny village he may feel intimidated to speak his mind. What use is he as net bowler there? They could have arranged some other left arm quick from India after the ODI series to give practice to our superstars.

This is very likely.  Even so, that's his choice.  Maybe in 3 years when he has 100 ODI wickets and his wife is expecting their 2nd one, he'll go.

You can't force him to go, either.  Maybe they offered to arrange another left arm quick but TN said, no, I'll do it.  Really, we are all shooting in the dark here.

If I were in Kohli or Shastri's place I would have forced Nattu to go back to India after the T20 series. Had he been in test squad sure give him options and respect whatever decision he takes. But to do that to a net bowler is exploitation, taking advantage of someone just because he will be extra nice cos of his background. You know he doesn't need to be there, you know he is achha bachha who will nod yes to everything you say, and you want him to be away from his new born baby for extra 1.5 months!!! What sort of mentors/leaders are these people?

Yeah, I guess it does come across as being a bit hypocritical.  But, who knows?  VK's dad died in 2006.  He was an 18-yr old trying to establish himself then and felt it necessary to live his family's dream.  And after 14 years, may be he is regretting it now and does not want to make the same mistake again.  Things happen.  Perspectives change.  People grow up.  Emotions are different from age 18 to age 32.  But talking mouths don't consider all that.

#GollumforCaptain :-).

I don't feel as strongly about this.  Another POV is that, for someone who is 29 y.o, this may be the last golden opportunity to establish his value in the team and he may have made a firm decision after consulting his famil.y.  Maybe his wife herself said "Inga vandu enna paNNikizhikkaporeenga?  Pesaama game-la concentrate paNNunga."  We just don;t know.

Thank you for posting this. Taking a paternal leave is a personal matter & shouldn't be questioned. But the main point Gavaskar is raising is about different rules for different players. Some players are harassed & some players are showered with love. Anyone who questions the hegemony of the regime has to be

Gavaskar wants Rohit to captain . Mumbai lobby in past few months has used every opportunity to push his case . I think it will happen in next 6 months

Gavaskar during his time saw his son Rohan after three  months and didn't even bother to ask for paternity leave.

That's a committed Bambi for you, unlike the battle hardened tough Guy from Delhi who has run away from the tour midway.

That too when the team is in difficult situation and morally at ultimate low. Even if he has preplanned to go back, after the humiliation at first test he could have stayed back for 2nd test at the least.

Yeah anyone better than this guy, but Rohit in tests is not the way forward

Hmm I thought you meant ODIs. Tests obviously no. But did you see the what Kohli has done with Indian cricket. Not even one guy can be trusted to take on Test captaincy or even ODI captaincy. He also kept Rahane as his back up, you cannot ask for a better loser as a backup.

Taking Paternity leave is a personal choice, which everyone should try to exercise

Relics like Gavaskar do not seem to understand modern culture (where you can also be divorced in no time - marriage is not necessarily a janam janam ka saath where the wife can be pushed around). If he is equating representing Ind in cricket to some patriotic endeavour, he is more foolish than I imagine him to be

I lost hopes on Virat the day they dropped an in form VIJAY and Pujara to accommodate Dhawan and Rohit in WI,this was 4 years back ..and he's only proved much worse than I expected him to be . So yeah am ok with Rohit for LOIs

You are underestimating the kind of influence Rohit has, if there is anyone who can topple him and with backing from Mumbai lobby I think its realistic

I am not going to criticize his decision to go back. In fact I will support him if he gets criticized for this particular thing. don’t have anything new

to add on al the other criticism he is deservedly getting

Our previous generation had a different way of thinking, they thought let the women folk handle this stuff and men would be at work. Now times have changed, we have nuclear families, women have their jobs etc. Our generation will approach these things differently compared to our forebearers. Obviously migrant laborers, poor people, soldiers etc won't have the same luxury.

Anyway my funda is once upon a time women suffered excruciating pain due to giving birth, sometime even died. Men took grave risks by going hunting, fighting wars, defending their communities, traveling through harsh terrain etc. So pain/suffering was split equally. In modern age most men don't have to face these sort of risks while almost all women still give births. Least husbands can do is be with the mother/baby during the ordeal, give moral support etc.

During normal times Kohli would have missed just one match, because of quarantine things are tougher. Not an ideal situation to be in but he had let his intentions be known to everyone before the tour started, he isn't running away after that pathetic loss.

Also while we are at it, massive respect to our soldiers who stay away from families, missing important events, going straight from marriage hall to border in couple of days time, many times suffering major injuries or dying before holding their new borns. True heroes, incomparable.

Kohli is an established player. He can go home and when ready, come back knowing that his place in the team, livelihood etc. is secure. Natarajan is trying to set up a career for himself. If successful, it will do wonders for him and his family. Just can’t compare the choices for the two players. Consequences are very different.
