Majestic Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 (edited) Let's come straight to point. Harbhajan was second fiddle to Kumble during the time they played with each other. Jadeja is second fiddle to Ashwin in this era. But who is a greater spinner between the two- Kumble or Ashwin? In 1990s:- Anil Kumble home average - 21(there were turners but not sure how many) Away average - 38 In 2000s:- Home - 27( flat wickets mostly) Away - 34 Ashwin Home - 22( but played on lot of turners) Away - 31 Anil Kumble bowled to better Aus, Pak, WI and SL team while Ravi Ashwin bowled to better England and NZ team. Khota Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 Kumble but Ashwin in current form is not far behind.
maniac Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 As a total package (batting and bowling) Ashwin. At his peak though Harbhajan was more threatening. I don’t want to get into the full sleeve/chucking debate. He wasn’t banned and it is what it is. As a cricketer: Ashwin As a bowler: Harbhajan only marginally ahead as of now. Ash has caught up quickly with the Aus series but one more defining overseas tour and he will be comfortably ahead. sage 1
Ankit_sharma03 Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 opinions will change as ashwin is at his peak but their wud be a low phase to specially at end (hopefully not) but neways will hold the judgement till that long But as a package ashwin scores over him and when u make a team u look for extra qualities specially when the comparison is so close. In an India ATG team another thing that also works in ashwin favor is edge of lefties which tradionally has been our nemesis and also his habbit of targeting top batsman of opposition.

goose Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 Ashwin has created a perception he spends night and day perfecting his art. Jadeja, however, appears to spend night and day planning his next hairstyle. Perception is reality. Jadeja is a great bowler. AuxiliA and Cricspin 2
jusarrived Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 I rate Ashwin highly as a bowler and more so as a all rounder, but batsmen these days have no defensive game against spinners . I don't agree pitches assist spinners more now, as we have played on dust bowls back then also but its a lot easier getting wickets against these clue less batsmen

Jadeja is at par with Ashwin and I think his overseas stats would have looked a lot better if he had been given enough opportunities goose 1
cowboysfan Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 Kumble.he was great in LOIs too.would love kumble in the modern game .

May be it has to do with the fact that Jadeja kept getting opportunities to succeed while Ashwin didn’t put a step down since debut. The only time he did, he lost his LOI spot. Jadeja is a great bowler though but it took us all permutations and combinations to figure out what he is good at, where as Ashwin was a strike bowler or played in that role from day 1. nevada 1
kohli Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 Very difficult to compare ashwin with kumble because kumble played with medicore fast bowler. Real McCoy 1

In India on a track that spins and bounces, Kumble had a lot of success bowling straight and making the batsmen play. The home average doesn't vary by much but the away average is lesser. Maybe one aspect that needs to be taken into consideration is the use of technology that bowlers use to dissect a batsman. Maybe if Kumble had the technology earlier, he would have been more successful. Kumble redeemed himself in that 03 tour to Australia where he had a 8fer on a dead track. Maybe that was the first signs of technology being used in coaching. This is a comparison between bowlers of different eras and I would like to say that they were the spin bowling spearhead of their time and cannot be compared but if somebody puts a gun to me and asks, I would say Ashwin just by looking at the records. I would extend it by saying we had other bowlers both pace and spin to help Ashwin and made his job a bit easier than Kumble who had only Srinath for support. Also Ashwin-Jadeja combo is a better combo than Kumble-Harbhajan. Kumble and bhajji didn't even play most of the away games while Ashwin and jadeja had played more.

ash Posted February 27, 2021 Posted February 27, 2021 For now Ashwin is slightly ahead for me, but We have to wait for him to finish his career, whether he finishes on a high like Kumble Murali Warne or dropped from the side like Harbhajan. His next 4 years will define his legacy, he can either be compared to Warne and Murali or peter out and just finish as an Indian great behind Kumble
