Is this the end of Ashwin?

With Thakur and Jaddu (with ball) doing well, I think the road back for Ashwin is only through injury or a rank turner in SENA. We dont play Pak and Sl/Bd are poor that any other spinner will do well.

Ashwin will be 35 soon. T20 wc and tour of Sa will follow. Mostly unless Jadeja is injured he will be back up in that tour.

So he is relegated to being a home test specialist. How long can he be just that before India look to blood young spinners?

Nah it isnt the end.

Dnt think jaddu has done well this series , he was selected as a batting all rounder and hasnt done well with bat and with this much bowling performance ashwin will start to look a better option soon.

If jaddu doesnt do well with bat he ll find it hard to save his place from sundar also who looks a better batsman. Jadeja has to put his weight with bat coz with ball i dnt see him to effective overseas.

Yes may be his chance to do well in england may not come again, sad as he went to play for 3 countries to work hard on this

All these theories n combination look good when u win but when u loose things start to change

Think so, won't play in SENA, WI under Kohli no matter what...even white ball formats, no chance. Let's be honest, there is one rule for someone like Rahane and another for Ashwin. Even if he scores 100s and picks 10fers from now on, there is no way back. It is personal now I guess, something English folks have latched on to

2 tests against NZ, I think 2 against Lanka in Feb '22, 4 against Aus in BG later next year, a 2 test series in BD, 2023 WTC F if venue is in Asia (unlikely). Probably 10 tests left in his career and I am not sure he is a guaranteed starter any more even in India. Not getting younger and he has chronic fitness issues. If Kohli is still skipper and Ashwin gets to play a few matches, he should look to retire on a high, maybe after BG next year. At least set an example in Indian cricket by retiring when people ask why and not when.

We have SLA, LS youngsters but not sure about offies. Maybe groom Sundar as a batting AR and hope for the best.

Ashwin can still be involved in some other capacity, maybe in administration or as broadcaster. Being the nerd he is, won't be surprised if he tries umpiring or coaching 5 years from now. But his playing career for India is on its last legs and he is semi-retired anyway, won't rule out the possibility of him playing county after retirement like Sanga or Amla, apart from an IPL gig perhaps.

Ashwin is at the mercy of injury to other players. Even then he could still omit him. When Ashwin retires we will know what went on. Right now he is going to keep mum. No one in the right mind would back Rahane but not Ashwin. He probably saw Ashwin as a threat to his captaincy. Rahane being his vice captain is the best bet for him. Zero threat whatsoever.

He has played 79 tests for India, 400+ wickets. If Kohli, Shastri, BCCI feel he isn't part of their long term vision, he must just take it sportingly, hopefully no drama or bad blood....team above any individual and our only target should be to win trophies and marquee series. Not many are lucky to play that many tests, hope he is content with his career, nobody is going to snatch away his 8 MOS or record dismissals of LHBs, latter being practically unbreakable. Sometimes **** happens and you are at the wrong place at the wrong time, like when he was finally maturing, TM/Kohli developed a different template/strategy....so he won't have a post-2003 career like Kumble. But will be nice if he is involved with Indian cricket in some capacity after his expected exit in 2022 or 2023.

Moving forward hope we ensure everybody is replaceable, not just bowlers or some characters in the setup. Indian cricket should eliminate mafia (brands, Bunty, media related etc.) culture, individual milestones, star-worshipping, regionalism and look to build optimized teams based on conditions so that we become a winning machine. We have a large enough talent pool to dominate every format, in every venue on this planet. Hope we work towards achieving that. Doesn't matter if it necessitates the early end of Ashwin, Kohli, Rohit. But please a culture of accountability first.....

Some of the deliveries he recently bowled were magical. He mixes the variation perfectly these days instead of trying the same. Jadeja on the other hand is literally a part timer. People say they won without Ashwin. Well we won without Jaddu too in Australia and India. We even won without Kohli.  This is a stupid argument that is being made against him.

Dude his career is practically over. Make peace with it, there is nothing you can do. Who knows, NZ home series may be his last assignment since we need to be at our best to beat the #1 side. But it is quite clear Indian cricket is moving in a different direction, at least the test team.

The absolute irony of all this, is that I would back Ashwin as a batsmen ahead of Rahane in the 5th Test.

Its actually comical now to see Rahane go out to bat each innings.

To put Rahane's effort in this series in perspective, he has only score about 22 more runs than Bumrah.

Rahane also poses zero threat to the opposition. Kohli would rather play with 10 men than drop his joke of a VC.

Eng logically expected Rahane would be dropped by now but can't believe their luck that Kohli still persists with him.

He is a spinner, he can still play 2-3 years more. The ones whose careers should be over are the unholy trinity, who need a makeshift batting allrounder as buffer to make up for their lack of runs. If they had been doing their job right, there wouldn't be a need for Jadeja and Ashwin could have been picked instead. Ashwin took loads of wickets at home. The holy Trinity failed at home too, but continue to be selected even abroad, where they suck equally or worse. Total double standards and Lahori logic! Their continued selection is an absolute farce. Without Shardul pulling off a Botham in this match and Shami-Bunrah doing a magical batting act in the second test, this series would have been a humilating loss.

Not entirely. Spinners can make great comebacks even at 35.

But the best thing for Ashwin will be to stay away from this dressing room where he is clearly unwanted. He should stay away from international cricket till Kohli is captain.

Play IPL

Then play the entire domestic season for TN from Nov-March

Next up will be IPL in Apr-May

Sign up for county cricket from June onwards. When there is no FC cricket happening, do a commentary gig with SKY or BBC

That should be his plan for the next 12 months.

Clown isn't going to stay as a captain forever. If he doesn't quit on his own, in the next 12 months his batting will keep  sinking further and will precipitate the end of his captaincy.

Ashwin can then comeback into the team once clown isn't in charge.

I think Ashwin will play for next 3-4 years at least...  Perhaps final series in Australia next time we tour over there.   He may not get into playing XI in SA though.

He will target at least 100 tests.

So if we won without him or Jaddu. Then what's the fuss? Why it has been made such a big issue. People always want to see negative stuff. Ashwin not playing overseas isn't a big issue.

Magical deliveries and variations only work when there is turn from  pitch. This pitch even on last day had no spin.

Ashwin will play in South African knowing how poor the current crop of Saffers are against the spin. On current form of Rahane, Ashwin should play at No. 5, he wouldn't do a worse Job than Rahane.

South Africa too we will play 4 fast bowlers.
