Will Count Pujara sign off in style in potentially his last test inning in SA? (Ind in SA 2022)

Count Pujara did a tough job of managing the new ball, served as a virtual opener in many games, in SENA against some of the cutting edge attacks across the periods. Making India proud by helping it win its first ever series in Aus in 2018/9 (500+ runs w/ 3 100s) and following it up with a series win in the same country in 2020/1 (3 fighting 50s in the last 4 innings in one of the most memorable series of all-time). Of course, his performances in the subcon have been legendary to make the Count the most impactful test batsman for India since 1990. 

 

Tomorrow, the Count will possibly walk for the final time in a test in South Africa, the remaining unconquered domain among key test nations for India. This is the type of situation that the count thrives on. Will we see the Count put up another memorable fight to help India add another feather to its cap, further solidifying his status as the king of darkness and the master of impact?

Pujara has become such a living legend of the game that ODI and T20 formats are starving of a legend like him.

 

In Johannesburg few days ago, Dean Elgar took immense inspiration from Pujara by watching the two innings of Pujara in Sydney and Brisbane on Day 5 wicket in 2020 to learn how to bat and win games in fourth inning. The game is pleased to have such inspirational figures and wish to produce more such men with the kind of grit and resilience that Pujara possess.

Completely agree with this. 

 

I know that Pujara has regressed but based on his exploits in the last decade he is amongst the top two  most impactful player for India

 

Pujara was our best batsman in subcontinent and a major contributor to making India a fortress. Then he won us a test series in Aus and performed really well at the Gabba too. 

 

For example Sachin has two centuries in victories in SENA in 24 years, Pujara had two in one tour.

Sachin's best period was 1996-99 from the top of the mind recall. He used to waste his series against good bowling attacks whether it is 1992 and 1996 SA. 1998-9 Pak (images of getting bowled by Akhtar at Kol) and 1999 Aus (though got a customary 100 per series much like Rahane's 1 good inning per series), and again nothing much against a firing Bond in 2002 NZ. Failure against Murali in SL in one of the series later on ... He did well against a relatively weak Eng and banked on an aging WI bowling attack.

 

Is Sachin a better batsman (say technically solid) than many? Yes ... Was he impactful? Not much relative to many of the guys being discussed.

Pujara is an ultra defensive batsman but nowhere as good as dravid. Unlike dravid who used to capitalise on bad deliveries, pujara plays in one tempo only. He just defends everything. At his peak he has usually seen off or made sure his wicket doesn't fall. How is he a impactful batsman? Until someone else also does not deliver his approach is meaningless. Even Rahane was more impactful than Pujara and that says a lot although Rahane regressed badly while Pujara is still much better batsman than Rahane now.

You don't understand the meaning of the word "impact". Impact doesn't mean scoring highest number of runs. 

If a batsman can "induce" 5 runs through overthrow that is called an impact. Also if a batsman uses his body instead of bat to face bouncers that is called an impact.

Since Pujara can't score runs, factors like impact, playing new ball (myth exposed in recent away series) are thrown to show he has been great batsman.

Btw, Indian team plays with 5 specialist batsmen and Pujara is consistently 5th or 6th best batsman in the side.

If you go by some of the comments in this thread you will get the impression that Pujara is great at getting multiple 100s in a series and making a series big when he fires. While others would just score 1 century and be contend with that.
