dilliboy Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 I know Pant hasn't set the stage on fire at international T20s but he is still a proven big match player. Add to the fact that he loves playing in Australian conditions. However with the top 3, irreplaceable and DK solidified as the finisher, the chances of him featuring in the first XI are slim unless someone has an injury. I feel the top order and DK will be badly exposed in the Australian conditions and we'll be left Licking the wounds of another disastrous ICC tournament. Hopefully this will be the curtains for our old warriors and we can see Pant, Shaw and Gill regularly in T20s in the near future. Norman 1
zen Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Ideally, Gill and Pant (or Samson or equivalent) could have played as openers in the upcoming T20WC!
Lord Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 TBF he has had his chances. AuxiliA, nevada and Stan AF 3
ipl is fun Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 I understand Pant loves to play in Australia.. What's the sample size? I thought it was just one series. That year his form in IPL was good too Since then he had many chances and hasn't done much. Reason why he is in 15 is we don't have any other leftie's or else Sanju would have been there
IndianRenegade Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Pant has had his chances, he is young & will get more chances. You don't pick a XI just based on potential, DK has come good in the role in the few chances he has got. Only thing I hope india had done was to try open with Pant instead of KL, but that isn't going to happen either so Pant will have to wait. Lord 1

Sanju had his chances, his T20 average if we remove mighty Ireland falls in same bracket as Harshal's batting average despite the fact he has batted up in the order a lot of times. It is easy to see that Pant's temperament is at different level while Sanju seems to fall short at internationals.

rkt.india Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 We have won last two T20 bilaterals against Australia in Australia. So in the it will come down to playing up to the potential.
Need4Speed Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 I wud prefer Pant to be tried as an opener..he could do what Shaw could do..quickfire starts

It is natural to back Pant given his mind set and unwavering faith in his own abilities. But he hasn't found his range in the middle order. In tests you get aggressive field set. In LOIs he will have defensive field set. That doesn't favor his batting style. Lot of his balls are mistimed. So someone on the fence or inner ring are able to catch him. Pant 3 matches 2 innings 20 runs avge 10 SR 117.64 in Australia DK 4 matches 3 innings 29 runs avge 30.00 SR 153.84 in Australia
nevada Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 I would dump Rahul and have Kohli move up to the opening slot. This will boost his SR as he gets a crack at the full power play overs. I would have Pant batting at 5 after Hardik at 4. Despite all his shortcomings, Pant is a better bet when the stakes are high. Rahul wil surely screw up in the big moments. Why persist with him? I dont see any upside.

AuxiliA Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 Pant cannot replace DK as the finisher. DK is better at hitting from ball 1. Only guy he can replace is Rahul who has lots of experience as an opener and Pant hasn't proved himself in T20Is despite plenty of chances. Can't really fault the TM for not playing Pant.
Adamant Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 Agree with others that we Can't fault the TM for this. Pant has played 60 t20is, we all know he is capable of great stuff in every format but TM is answerable to a lot of people. Also it can be that Pant isn't working hard on his t20i game, if that's the case then he deserves the axe.
Bigg Brother Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 Pant should focus on Tests and ODIs from now on..I know he will play one good innings here and there in t20s but don't think he should focus that much in this format..India have enough keeper batsman who would replace DK after wt20...The format is hit or miss..The guy is already on his way to greatness in the longest format and getting his mojo in ODIs...Should focus on that...
putrevus Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 He should not be first choice as he never delivered inspite of getting so many chances.

Exactly. He doesn't need to become a T20 legend. It means very little. Rizwan can keep all his rankings for his batting. But pakistanis are divided about his approach.

They don't want to be known as t20 rejects for one simple reason IPL. Pant is talented enough to play an impactful innings in Australia,Who knows he just might end up playing one of those innings to get India over the hump.
Clarke Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 The number of players suggested for opening here is astounding. BCCI should ensure rule change where four openers can open, two for both ends. If one misses, other swings the bat. That way ICFs collective dream of Rohit, Kohli, Pant & Pandya opening comes true. sorak, Adorable Fan, BacktoCricaddict and 1 other 4

In a given match up he is probably a better bet against SA given that SA's trump card is Shamsi. Also has practice against Rabada in the nets with DC. May be they can play him in that one match. Nobody questions his talent. But if the reasons is inexplicable we may persist with him. But we can see why he is struggling. He has time and against proved he is not someone like Raina who can tee off from ball 1 and make clean connection. When he tries to do that he looks ungainly looks like a hack.
