MSK Prasad names three young wicket-keepers as Rishabh Pant’s backup, says ‘We’ve been grooming them across all formats’

Recommended Posts

India chairman of selectors MSK Prasad stated that the selection committee is working towards grooming back-up wicket-keepers. Pant has been under a lot of scrutiny ever since he broke into the Indian side and that went up several notches after he was pitted as the first-choice keeper for all three formats following MS Dhoni’s decision to go on a self-imposed break post the World Cup.

But unfortunately, Pant has blown hot and cold in the matches he has played after the world cup. He did score a fantastic half-century in the 3rd T20I against West Indies but apart from that he has not been able to notch up up a good score. More than runs, it’s the manner in which Pant has been getting out that has given a headache to the Indian team management.

“Of course, we have been grooming backups across all formats. We have the young KS Bharath doing well in the longer format for India A. We also have Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson doing well in the shorter formats for India ‘A’ and domestic cricket,” the chief selector added.

It is to be mentioned that Prasad had also indicated that it will be up to the Indian team management on whether they want to treat Pant as their first-choice keeper in Test matches or not. “It’ll be up to the Indian team management. They want a better keeper on spinning tracks at home,” Prasad had said when asked whether Pant was still the first-choice keeper or is there a case for Wriddhiman Saha’s return to the playing XI.

msk seems like a puppet with these statemnets. rat has ultimate control of bcci. for some reason, rat doesnt like pant. maybe pant criticized bollywood and virushka didnt like it. who knows. Im not watching any of the matches and these stupid interviews from msk. im basically done with cricket unless someone challenges rat and his monopoly on cricket

Is this a joke or something !

Why is so much pressure being put on young Pant via public statements. ?

Why can't they scold him in private and keep the names of backups to themselves. ?

Exactly.. I can understand some criticism of Pant, but all those should be within closed doors. He hasn't done badly at all to get this kind of public scrutiny, particularly in Tests.

Makes me wonder what has Pant done horribly wrong to merit this amount of scrutiny and criticism. He hasn't even played enough and has not done very bad till now. Yuvraj, Raina, Rohit Sharma and Kohli himself didn't set the world on fire on the get go. They took time. And this hypocrite Kohli wants Pant to play sensibly (joke) like Dhoni who has a decade of experience and still couldn't get his team through in the semifinals.

He took the place of Godfather Dhoni, that's what he did. Without Dhoni, Kohli the captain is clueless. He desperately wants to win the T20 world cup to fix his legacy and for that, he desperately needs Dhoni the on-field captain. No wonder he is trying his best to bring him back.

Just today I read an article where Gambhir mentioned that without Rohit and Dhoni to help him out, Kohli is lost and his IPL record is proof of that. Instead of reaching the WC semi-finals, it would have been better if we had crashed out after 3-4 games itself so that Kohli's toxic regime would have come to an end. But now, we are stuck with him for another 4 years of mediocrity and mindless non-selections.

Gambir makes an excellent point.
