1. kohli = best ODI batsman of his generation. comfortably ahead of anyone in his age group. not sure if he makes it to 400 games, but he'll get to 300 and set all the records along the way.

 

2. tendulkar = best opener ever. i mean, its not even close. the ones that come close to matching his average have limp dick strike rates under 80. kallis' strike rate is a puny 72, LOL. tendulkar's strike rate is the same as that of modern day greats like amla, williamson, root and smith, which is astonishing considering the eras he played in. i'd even say he is the best batsman ever.

 

3. dhoni is the best middle order batsman ever. he is tendulkar of the middle order. you can make an argument for de villiers but he never won south africa anything, so i'd rather have dhoni. honorable mention to viv richards, exceptional average and strike rate for his era, albeit in a time when ODI cricket was garbage.

Abraham de Villiers is amazing too - 9k runs at over 50 average and the only batsman in the list with 100 strike rate.

What is amazing about Tendulkar is that in his career span he had a SR of 87 along with one of the highest averages at that time while scoring all those runs. That is like a whole couple of generations ahead. That is the kind of numbers batsmen like kohli are putting in this era of batting. 

 

Tendulkar was so good that there are so many matches you do not even remember his big contribution. I was looking at the history of champion's trophy and saw this scorecard (1998) - http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/66165.html 

 

He scored 141 (128) in a team total of 307 and then took 4-38 vs. Aus. That is like once in career match for everyone but you don't even remember this match. 

 

We all remember that Srinath-Prasad chased match vs. Aus but not many remember that Tendulkar was 88 our of a total of 164 when 8th wicket fell. People call him out for not finishing the match but next highest scores were Srinath (30) and Jadeja (27). He literally did it all by himself.

Kohli is now the no. 1 batsman in both ODIs and T20s, if only he was no. 1 in tests too, it would have been perfect, but he has fallen to no. 5 in tests after that miserable test series against australia

It just shows how great Viv Richards was in a era with weak bats and no field restrictions he averaged 47 with SR 90. The greatest ODI batsman. Kohli would be my second best batsman.

The odi bowling wasn't great during viv's era, all the great bowlers were in viv's side, there was no great spinner in viv's era, the only decent spinner viv faced was qadir and he struggled against him, there was no south africa, viv's game was suited for the limited formats and during viv's time the odi game wasn't developed enough to counter viv's style. Viv would have been a great player even in the 90s but his stats are inflated due to lack of competition during his era, he was a great odi batsman but not as great as his stats suggest

Looks nowhere near his fluent best, but still finding ways to score runs.  I'll take that from a captain anyday.  Not easy to maintain individual performances while captaining the side.  The likes of MS, VK are spoiling us to the extent that we are used to it.

Agreed - because he was a FAR better batsman than what his (outstanding) ODI stats suggest.

50+average across so many odi games as captain is insane, and we have two captains doing it one after other.
