Not often.  But that's not his role anyway.  He should be judged primarily on his batting at #6.   But the fact that he adds depth to the bowling unit buys him a longer rope than it would be for a 'specialist' batsman.  Even in this match, he showed good grit and temperament with the bat - after Virat got out, he dug in and did his best to play the anchor role because Pant was at the other end.  Its another thing that he got dismissed to a decent ball, but the intent, method, shot selection - mental and physical approach was all in the right direction.

If you expect Pandya to give you consistent results as a front-line bowler, you are going to be disappointed.  

At 6 it's either about lower order partnerships, or runs from Pandya. I don't expect too many runs from him in tough situations, however he must contribute with the ball. He gets 4 innings to perform in a test. If he does well or decentish in 2 out of 5 he'd have done his job.

 

It's also about improving your technique, which he can given enough time.

 

Ashwin has regressed in the last few years, we can't expect the odd fifty he delivered 4 years back. Pant or Pandya need to deliver every other game in their respective positions.

 

I'm not expecting anything from him, but even if he does half of what Watson achieved at his peak, India will do well abroad. The big caveat being catching, which is still a major worry.

His contribution in batting and bowling will be once in a few tests for India to risk his spot instead of a proper batsman or a bowler. Happy to be proved wrong if he does what he did in this test., Have to shut up and see if he can do this more often.

which proper batsman would have done better in these conditions?  There is a reason he is our 2nd highest run getter in tests in 2018.

Now gets a run a ball 50 to help the team's cause .pretty sure kohli will trust him with the ball again ,he is pretty good in these conditions with the ball

Kid is showing gr8 application while batting, lack of exp is hurting him at times 

 

If batsman above do their job having pant n pandya can be a real asset for this side

kahe ke batsman if they want to bat late against old ball

and at 7,8 a lot of time u might comeup against 2nd new ball

What a match for Hardik Pandya. 5 fer and 50. Definitely his bowling average and sr will fall much lower as those 5 wickets came for just 28 runs and in 36 balls.

 I see this thread has been unnecessarily stretched for 10pages, his batting and bowling average will drastically improve by the time the series is over and will be even better when he will play in India,  so number/stats obsessed experts should just chill.
