Looks like Pant doesn’t have the match awareness to play LOIs

Whenever I have seen him play ODIs and T20s every ball is swish,swoosh, hack, slog,wild swing etc

 

He plays every ball like it is the final over of the innings. I noticed this even when he got a 50 odd against WI in one of the T20s.

 

He clearly has the ability as shown in england and even in Australia but just doesn’t seem to have the temperament for LOIs which is weird as it is usually the other way around.

 

Obvioulsy having match awareness doesn’t mean playing like Dhoni and try those “taking it to last over stunts” or you don’t have to be as good as Kohli to have those calculations in your head during a chase, but atleast pick and chose what you want to hit and show some amount of thinking ability

 

Sorry to say he comes across as a total hack in LOIs even though we know that he isn’t one based on his test credentials.

 

Don’t know why he finds it necessary to play at a strike rate of 300 every innings.

I think more than T20 he needs to play in odi and test. I think he ll be more successful in odi than T20 in intially part of the career.

Don’t think he has a great LIST A record either. That shouldn’t matter as Pujara or all people has a fantastic LIST A record. Pant is tailor made for LOIs and is a fantastic striker of the ball, however he needs to get his head straight. He is a much better bat than to play like a WI or a Pakistani hack

Yes. I think for that he need to spent some time in crease which he ll get in odi than T20.

Match awareness comes when you play games consistently at international level.

In and out doesn’t help.

Just had a look at his LOI stats:

 

3 ODI's  - avg 20.50 at sr 132.25

11 T20i - avg 17.88 at sr 118.80

 

And the IPL stats

IPL career - avg 35.65 at sr 162.71

 

In tests he has been a totally different batsman. Second highest scorer after Pujara in last series iirc.

That’s a myth. I have seen 19 year olds look like they belong from game 1 and 30 year old domestic Veterans look clueless.

 

So far his LOI batting is a let down. If he is batting in the last 3-4 overs every game and getting out in that fashion benefit of doubt but I have seen him look confused in his approach even when he has time on hands.

 

I am a fan of his and hope he does well but so far  not convinced on his temparament to finish out games.

Not talking about 1 game, I think this was pointed out in the past. Obviously now he has the confidence of establishing himself as the premier keeper in tests but still playing like a rookie who wants to go at the rate of knots is worrying. 

 

Still waiting for that defining innings.

 

Hardik Pandya looks more composed at the crease than Pant.

Pant's game is not like Virat Kohli's or Gill's or that of just anchoring in the middle.

 

Those kind of players ready to grind it out as they know that they will be always batting in the middle order and have to make sure they "hold one end"

 

Players like Pant have natural ability to hit the ball out of the park and even though they can consolidate in the middle, management and in general everyone expects them to unleash their beast and such players need to spent time in international cricket to be successfull as they play many different hats of coming up the order at times to rescue the team and also are expected to tonk the ball from ball 1. 

 

Such is the nature of expectations from these kind of players. They have to prepare different way from players like Shubman Gill would do or Kohli or or say Steven Smith etc. 

 

That is why you show more patience with such players and let them grind it out. Raina was a good example. He was persisted with and then succeeded in his earlier days. 

 

Pant needs to be given a long rope like Raina. A consistent one.

He was swatting around in tests also, but since had enough time there, he got those 30s, and then after some swats, changed his mindset against a tired Aus attack for that 100. 

 

I think there is too much expectation. They need to be allowed time to grow, all these young players.

Pant  too is  a batsman  who needs time to settle in and then cut loose.Naturally he can't be that '10 ball 25 run cameo' player. For me his best batting position in one dayers is no:4 .

Dhoni was a master at ODI innings once and his level of match awareness and percentage cricket can take Pant to a different level. This outdated Dhon may be only about last over stunts but Dhoni of 2005 was more intelligent in various situations.

However, Pant deserves consistent chances to prove himself. Also that was his hit in NZ

Pant tries those reverse and fance shots too often however this mundane robotic Indian batting lineup deserves one of his ilk

Once the WC is over slot him at number 3 and make Kohli bat at 4, at least for a while. Force him to learn how to construct an ODI innings.

One good knock will set him right. The 100 in Eng did that in Tests, needs something similar in LOIs.

 

Also, can we not have the sword of Dhoni hanging over his head? When he is the squad, he should play as a keeper batsman. For a young wk-batsman to play as a specialist batsman, something he has never done in life must be so difficult. Give him the sense of security like he now has in Tests and he will prosper.

I'm hoping he would play in the WC or atleast make the squad
