Any self respecting management will sack people who are responsible for this. The way Dhoni batted was pathetic. He should have atleast batted at 75 strike rate, he just put all the pressure on the batsman at the other end. What's the point of his innings. Top order should be sacked too. You can't go in knowing fully what is going to come and still look like clowns. One ball was a preacher everything other was nothing delivery. 

1. Rohit - got a peacher but he should have been lot more proactive.

2. Kohli - only a *ing moron will play across the stumps in a seaming wicket. Totally **** batting.

3. Rahul - fishing for a delivery in a sixth stump line. 

4. Pant and Pandya - Both played well and both got out to nothing deliveries.

5. Dk - He *ing doesn't merit a line.

6. Jadeja - was surprised, plated out of his skin

7. Dhoni - if he has any shame he should retire now.

It is not hindsight to say that Dhoni should have come in at #4 or even #5.   Asking Pant and Pandya to soak up pressure and hold back their strokes, instead of keeping them for the end, was a strategic blunder.  

 

The end showed that all we needed was one good innings and a couple of cameos.  Jadeja gave us that one good innings.  But Dhoni was the wrong man for the job in the end.  He should have come in earlier.  

 

As much as I wanted Dhoni to retire 6 months ago, I have to say that I feel for him the way he got out.  So close.  And to go out like this.

Why the sympathies. He got it to a point of RR going over 15 rpo especially when the guy at the other end got more than a run a ball 50. He should have trusted his partner who is supposedly a bowling allrounder to give him back the strike instead of risking a 2 against one of the best fielders in the world.

 

No sympathies. Brainless cricket and a selfish innings reflective of the 2nd half of his career.

Overall nice return from India impressive and topped the league.  So NZ have now gone through, thanks in part to the pitch in the second inning after rain.

Absolutely. I don't know why he was hiding. If he is such a bender of physics he should have come once Rahul got out. Do all his tuk tuk at that time and get out.

Dhoni's innings is looking better just because of that onslaught from Jadeja. He could have put away bad balls as well. This was bound to happen. Anyways Jaddu gave us something to cheer about...how likely was that?

Virat and team management never learn from mistakes and make strategic blunders.They will never improve.Rohit has to be given captaincy.

Unfortunately in our culture it won't happen unless we get a colossal failure ala 2007 WC. In hindsight we might nitpick over missed chances, selections or a particular bowler getting thrashed in this match but the biggest regret is our inability to rotate the strike. Yes, New Zealanders bowled well & had our backs to the wall but come on our batsmen were playing against Henry not McGrath.

Look - I don't disagree that the Dhoni chase method was not the way to go.  But you got to accept the fact that today's Dhoni is what he is - with his drastically reduced hitting capacity, with his "take it deep" mindset.  Don't have to agree with it, but just recognize it for the reality that it is.  What I don't accept, is the choice by team captain and coach to hold him back.  Its not Dhoni's job to decide that, even if he prefers it that way.  Its the leadership that decides the right tool for the right job, and the right batsman at the right time.  

 

And I agree with you that "refusing singles" was a bad gamble - a much worse one, than the risky double that saw him run out.  

 

But, my perspective on it, takes into account the entirety of Dhoni's career.   not just the last 2-3 years.  30 'bad' ODIs don't wipe out the 300 great ones.   When he was the trailblazer that was instrumental in changing Indian ODI batting mindset from habitual chokers to habitual successful chasers.    

 

And its a bit of selfish thinking too - I wanted to see him succeed against the odds today.  So that we could see India into the finals.  So that I could get together with my family, my 3 year old daughter, my niece and nephew, and have a great Sunday with everybody dressed in their India shirts. 

 

Not to be.    Maybe next time.
