Shardul Thakur seems pissed after Unadkat picked ahead of him

The only fig leaf for Unadkat to make it into this series/test match, is that the toyger flavor of slow low turners is the kind of conditions that Saurasthra play in, and Unadkat has shown proficiency in.  I mean, its not like Shardul was overlooked for Unadkat for England conditions right?  As much as we didn't want to see Unadkat trundling in Bangladesh, did we want Shardul?

Shardul did well in ODI series here with the ball. Remember Unadkat wasn't even in the squad which was announced. Shardul is well within his rights to feel hard done by the management as he feels he has been unfairly pushed behind in the pecking order.

I think this much planning is too much to expect from Mhambrey and Co

What about the players who played for India A ,Irani.Trophy.

Unadkat was selected after Saurastra won the Vijay Hazare tournament.

If he was selected for doing well in Ranji trophy he should have been in the India A squad

It was a 17 man test squad, some1 has to sit out, why would you  need to select 17 members in a 2 match BD series.

Also selection of Unadkat was more like a place holder for Shami's return so that his place was not threatened by any new/younger bowler.

Even if Unadkat would have picked 5 wkts in an innings the TM and selectors will not received any backslash (though they do not care abt. external noise in Ind player's term) if they now decides to drop Unadkat out of the test squad for next series.

Not 100% on this but I think it could be also to do with retirement/future plans, may be Saurashtra cricket Asctn is looking him as  office Bearers/coach or something or may be some selector or IPL coach.

Kuldeep run through bangladesh side on a similar track (slow turner) in the first test. He was the only one getting bounce on it.

What's the point of replacing him with Unadkat?

Let's say we have a peak kohli and for a certain match we need a good batsman of spin, will you replace kohli with Mayank Agarwal? You will find someone else who is replaceable because kohli was anyway doing great job.

What's the point of replacing someone who is killing it in a particular track with someone who can (probably) do well on that track. You are replacing a certainty with a probability.

It wasn't same track. They got fooled by grass on day one.

Unadkat as i told earlier was chosen to create footmarks for Ashwin as ashwin was toothless in last test. In this tert he bowled marginally better but the move nearly backfired as Mehidy hassan ran through our top and middle order by putting the ball exactly on those footmarks.. this in English is called digging your own grave with your own hands.. iyer and ashwin somehow stopped us from falling in that grave..

You are overthinking. Unadkat being in the squad itself is based on influence. Kuldeep would have run through them.  Playing 3 seamers like its MCG si pathetic. Mehidy took 12 wickets against England to bury them.  Even their famous win against Australia was due to Shakib's spell. There is no record of seamers running riot on Mirpur pitch. If anything you go with 4 spinners.

Oh I agree that Shardul is entitled to be miffed - I mean, its not like he's young and gets lots of chances for test cricket - of course if there was a 3rd pacer slot he would want that opportunity.

I don't think Shardul is a great bowler, but I respect his work ethic, his skillset and contribution to Indian test cricket.  I think in ANUS conditions he's still a no-brainer squad pick or maybe even XI pick as long as he's fit and maintaining his bowling pace and efficacy.  Not in India or Asia though.

yep, smells like Dravid's textbook thinking all right.
