The decorated international careers of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli could end rather quickly than fans may have anticipated. According to a report of Dainik Jagran, the ODI series against Australia in October could be the last of their careers. As per reports, Rohit and Kohli must play the domestic one-day competition of Vijay Hazare Trophy if they wish to stay in contention for the 2027 World Cup.

Both Rohit and Kohli have announced their Test and T20I retirements, choosing to focus only on ODI cricket moving forward. With the batting pair agonizingly missing out on winning the 50-over World Cup in 2023, they are likely wanting to end their careers by lifting the coveted trophy in 2027.

Nevertheless, BCCI reportedly requiring Kohli and Rohit to play in the domestic retirement could force them into retiring earlier than expected. The Indian cricket board reportedly want the veteran pair to stay in touch with the one-day rhythm and press their case as hard as possible for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa. In one of the earlier reports, it emerged that the BCCI wishes to have 'honest conversations with Rohit and Kohli about featuring in the 2027 World Cup as the selectors also wished to try youngsters.

 

India to play three ODIs and five T20Is against Australia

 

 

Meanwhile, the limited-overs tour of Australia for India begins on October 19 with the three-game ODI series, followed by five T20Is. The Men in Blue were to tour Bangladesh in August for three ODIs and as many T20Is but the BCCI had postponed the series.

With Asia Cup 2025 also set to be played in the T20I format, fans will get to see the prolific batting duo only in October.

If you are only playing ONE format then you should be playing 50 over domestics tournaments in the lead up to 2027 ODI WC.. if they dont want to they can * off

I won't be surprised if they do retire.
Already retired from 2/3 formats, ODI's has in general taken a backseat and Tests/T20's are the favourites.
Cricket is a showbiz business, people don't see you on the ground long enough, they stopped caring about you.
Recent test series, started with nostalgia of Ro-Ko...ended with heroics of Gill, Jadeja, Siraj, Prasidh. Likes of Washington is being seen as one of the mainstays.

Rohit should be asked to take a call now. Kohli should be given Aus series as one last hurrah as he is fit and is a ATG ODI player for India. Rohit is not fit and should retire although he has his claims for ODI ATG for India. Winning CT  is good enough to celebrate their greatness.

This is sad. In the 2023 WC, they scored 47 and 54 at a SR > 100. Everyone else dragged us down. Based on this, they should be given the opportunity to play for a long as their hearts desire and serve their country.
