Why split captaincy is a concern?

There seems to be an angle on this, he gave up test captaincy, then player two years, then said he wants to play n lead till 2019, looks like either selectors or Virats success forced him to resign, coz last two years one team was a champion side n destroying opposition n one was poor under him, n he could not hide any longer.

Disagree here. When Dhoni himself became T20 captain we had Dravid leading in Tests and ODIs. Later on, Kumble was leading us in Tests till October 2008 I believe (correct me if I'm wrong here). We were doing fairly well in this period as well.

 

As much as I admire MS, it does seem like a little insecurity has crept in. 2015 was especially bad for him.

 

Whatever said and done though, the right decision has been made.

If you watch his full interview - he clearly lays it out as a natural progression - its obvious he wanted to lead the 2nd string squad in Zimbabwe almost as a swansong type thing - he says it and he knew himself that his captaincy is on its last legs.  

 

If you want to be harsh, you could argue that he should have done it a handful of games earlier, but really what's the difference?  Its not as if he hung on to captaincy well past it.  You could have made that claim if he did it through the champions' trophy.  Doubters can claim that he's giving it up because he's calculated that India are a long shot to win it anyway - and that could be true.  We will never know what's inside his head.  But overall, timing on giving up ODI captaincy is decent.  I think he's being reasonably gracious about it.  Its not his fault if the commentators and the media make it a big thing - that's their job - to make an event out of it and milk it for more ratings.

I would think in a country like India with the number of games played, IPL, Champions league etc, we would have even more need for split captaincy. Dhoni aged 20 years being the captain, its a highly strenuous role. Split captaincy would only help players. Watch Kohli burn out soon if he continues being captain in all format including IPL

I don't have much to say about his ODI  captaincy during his last few years......he has been under-performing in the last 3 years but the lack of  big tournaments, apart from WC2015, might have given him the will to carry on.

I'm glad there was a transition period. It worked out well. I'd be complaining if MS wasn't good enough to be in the ODI XI, but was still captaining the side. 

 

I am ok with how this played out.

I am totally on board with criticism of Dhoni's test captaincy, especially in the last few years.  Very ordinary test captain, and not good enough.  Whether he hung on because of selfish reasons, or because the next guy wasn't deemed ready by BCCI is debatable.  Judging intent based on limited information we have available to us, as fans, is always dicey.

Agreed that captaincy should never be split and it makes sense to have a captain who deserves to be in the team in all three formats. Else it leads to confusion as different captains may be asking different things from players and may in fact back different players altogether leading to confusion.

 

Good that it's Kohli's team now and he can build his team for the next WC. Though I do wish that Rahane has no future in shorter formats just like Murali Vijay and that Yuvraj has no future in any format. Period. Hopefully he backs youngsters such as Pant, Hooda, Pandya, Sarfraz Khan etc.

Generally, you don't put all eggs in one basket, just to see how stable the new leader is. Sometimes , absolute power can damage.

Once you determine maturity, you start the transition.

Every single legend in the history of cricket has been criticized but somehow Dhoni is an untouchable God to his fan boys. Sachin fans are mocked for calling him God but Dhoni fans are literally treating him as one based on posts like these

 

You want to talk about bitter fools? Dhoni fans took pot shots at Sachin, Dravid, Laxman, Sehwag and others just to big up Dhoni multiple times. Yuvraj and Gambhir too. Then they had no problem treating and saying shameful things abut Indian legends. Then they were glad these legends were "kicked out". Multiple times. The same people who are now whining the most at Dhoni criticism were the first ones in lines. People like @sidhoni love to act pious now and play victim

 

Just a friendly piece of advice. Everyone has their favorites in the era they watched cricket most and grew up. They have their idols and have emotional connect. They have wonderful memories about them, When you shit on past players when they are down to big up your rising star, expect things to come full circle one day. You have all the rights to criticize them all you want but then dont expect your own favorites to be spared either when their time is nearly over and a new star comes

MTC your post reveals that you say what you say about Dhoni because Dhoni fanboys said something about Sachin.  I dont know about them but this makes you a Sachin fanboy lol. And not everyone has an emotional connect.

Split captaincy is not an issue. Dhoni being an old man amidst juniors in a young man's game is the problem. Even the usually circumspect England have picked a dynamite LOI side with new age players whereas we continue to cling on to gaye guzre players and strategies. It is always self above team interests.
