Rohit vs Rahul as opener

Does it make sense that we continue with Rohit in ODIs as opener. He is found wanting when there is a slight bit of movement. He can be more dangerous down the order. I know Dhawan and Rohit shared some success. But when they fail we more often than lose. Also distributing the power right through the line up makes more sense. More i watch India under Kohli, it is almost like RCB under Kohli. There is distinct lack of balance. We consistently go with top heavy batting line up. India needs to enhance its depth and make the most out of all the resources.

I think in ODIs (at least for WC), we need to play Dhawan & Rohit as opener followed by Rahul at 3. I know Kohli has some legendary stats at 3, but due to team's requirement there is harm in batting at 4. Also, if we lose an early wicket, no.3 is bit too high for Kohli in England (aka CT Finals).

I am afraid against the likes of Starc,Rabada,Amir,Willey Rohit will be a sitting duck if they get a little bit of swing. But I don't think with WC next year they would change the opening combination.

No he cant be , he failed previously also and he ll fail now to

  • he loves ball coming on bat at start, no better then new ball and pace bowlers
  • he can use PP to cover his dot balls
  • at opening he can move acc to hi pace, in middle situation will dictate how he ll have to bat which he is not good at
  • he is not good at strike rotation which is very important in middle
  • give 150+ balls to rohit he ll cause more destruction then anyone
  • he himself is comfortable at that place
  • he has build his game like that only

Their is no reason he ll do well in middle and he didnt do well to at start of his career

He was struggling against Chahar at the wankhede
Who Rohit?
I was talking about KL Rahul at #4
That is the only place open for him IMO

It's unlikely Rohit would do well at #4, because of his past history in the MO and his style of play.

One option is for Virat to bat at #4 and take the responsibility of the middle order. IMO, this may work well. The batting is better distributed. Top 3 can play their game freely with the assurance that MO is in the experienced hands. Kohli and Dhoni are suited to work through middle overs and take the game deep. Pandya and another batsman to round off the batting lineup.

R Sharma

S Dhawan

K Rahul

* V Kohli

+ M Dhoni

H Pandya

--- Another Batsman ---

I think Rahul is not sure how to tweak his game for #4 position. He wants to bat as an opener. This useless combo of Rohit and Dhawan has done a lot of damage to his career.

He's a big match player and we need to support him at which ever the position he is comfortable to bat at, as the team won't go far with FTBs like Rohit at the top.

Problem with Rohit is that against quality attacks in next year's WC he'll go kaput. Left arm quicks like Starc, Boult, Amir will toy with him and we will effectively be playing those matches a player short. We have seen enough of him, he isn't going to improve anymore. I would prefer Rahul to open with Gabbar but that won't happen under this regime :((

Ideally this should be our batting order come June 2019:

Dhawan

Rahul

Kohli

Rohit

Pant

Karthik

Pandya

If Rohit isn't comfortable starting in the middle orders he can GTFO, team trumps any individual and even if that weren't the case Rohit isn't a Viv around whom a batting strategy can be formulated...he is quite dispensable IMHO.

Today I will pick Rahul. I will keep him on a short leash though.

He should be given a guaranteed long run of 20-25 consecutive matches just like Sachin/Kohli/Rohit/Dravid/Gambhir.... in their initial years. If team management is going to judge him based on 3 innings and drop him every now and then they are doing a great disservice not only to Rahul but also to Indian cricket. By putting a short leash on Rahul you will only make him a nervous wreck and curtail his natural abilities...besides that is another sure shot way of cultivating selfishness which thankfully eludes him so far. When there is an axe perennially over a batsman's neck greater probability of him playing for stats thus ensuring prolonged selection at the cost of team's needs....a maverick like Rahul shouldn't be controlled, he should be unleashed on the opponents.

From one of your earlier posts I infer that you are an old timer. In that case you must be familiar with Australia's tour of India in 1969 under Bill Lawry...their last triumph over here before 2004. The Green Park test was GR Vishwanath's debut and he got out for a 1st ball duck in the 1st dig, stones were thrown at him by a certain section of spectators during his walk back to the pavilion. He was inconsolable after that, avoiding his team mates and nervous as hell. After dinner Pataudi (captain) took him one side and told him that he needn't worry, he would get the next 9 innings to show his potential and that no one would judge him based on his initial failure, that he had greatness written all over him. Now Pats was an aloof figure who wouldn't mingle well with most people...but that stirring conversation motivated Vishy who got a 137 in the 2nd innings with 25 4s, 10 of them against the legendary McKenzie !!!! That innings brought in many Indian people into cricket, my dad who was never really into cricket those days was listening to the ball by ball commentary on radio and became a cricket fan by the end of that innings. We all know the legendary feats of the artist Vishy but remember the role Pataudi played in getting the best out of him. Pataudi was a great thinker of the game and he wasn't a proponent of the leash theory.

Am not very sure KL will do well at 4/5 . Hes a quality player and has the game , but for openers its always difficult to change their approach while the reverse is fairly easy .

There are dozens of examples of middle order batsmen doing well as openers , but can hardly think of one players whos drop down the order and done better .

its the exact opposite in Tests though .

I dont know for how long I have been saying this . Top heavy with unreliable batsmen like Rohit , we are not winning anything major in near future . I just cant see India winning 3 KO matches on a trot with Sharma at the top , unless Virat plays a blinder in all three .
