Gavaskar Picks Mayank / Rohit As Openers

Just because Gill has done well, doesn't make him an opener.  Gill is a great prospect but a #3 who converted to opener to expedite his entry into the India XI.

And clearly Gavaskar is a bit biased when it comes to getting Rohit into the team.  The fact that he's asking Rohit to open is actually an improvement - a more biased person would want Gill to take that tough job.

Why not give chance to KL?

what has KL done in red ball cricket at any level in the last 2 years?  If the team felt he was a genuine option, he would have played the tour games.  KL is only there as COVID insurance.

Now don't get me wrong, personally I'm a big believer in KL as an all format player, and want him back in the test team too.  But it is what is.

So to accommodate Rohit, they have to reshuffle entire batting order. Where will Pujara bat then? Where will Rahane bat?

They will bat at their usual slots - if Vihari makes way for Rohit. I am not advocating that - just guessing.

Not according to Mr.Gavaskar.He wants Mayank and Rohit to open and Gill to bat number 3. So what will happen to others then according to him?

I will open with Gill for this series and then move Gill down the order later. Don't change Gill's position right now when he is comfortably playing on top on this tour where our batting has been in a mess. Just because we won a test match, our batting isn't all of a sudden doing great. We can think of bigger plans for him at the end of the series. Also, just to accommodate players who are sitting out - Rohit and Rahul, we should not change our batting order for now. Gill might give us best results in the middle order in the future, but it will be stupidity to move him to midddle order at this time when team is clearly struggling with the opening position and he is the only one looking to score and blunt and bludgeon the ball easily.

I want Gill to open atleast in this series.Rohit and Mayank are very iffy against new ball and leftarmers .0/2 will not suprise me.We all saw how Rahul and Dhawan were walking wickets for two years. Losing openers cheaply puts so much pressure on already fragile batting line up.

Gill might be long term number 3. but we have to revisit that position later.

Rohit is a proven failure in these conditions as opener. Make Pujara  to open  .Even if he is 0* in 60 balls,  that  can help the following batsmen.  Mayank should be sustained.

He can come good at any time as was the case in the previous AUS series.

i hope they open with Rohit, they have made enough adjusment to make him open at home. Last time they cud have opened with him in AUS n WI as their were talks but they made vihari do that in Aus and then suddenly made rohit open at home.  He cant just open at home and then for his safety be pushed in middle overseas. IF they want to make him an opener then test him overseas or else dont waste that spot at home on him

If Sydney wicket is a patta, Rohit is must as an opener.

Regardless of the surface, there will be enough movement with the new ball. Having said that, it will be foolish to play Mayank as the opener as he's clearly short of confidence and needs some time out to fix his game. Rohit can get a couple of boundaries early which will definitely help the team.
