Has he tried bowling bit fast? Should experiment that tomorrow... How about changing his line from middle & leg to off & middle if he wishes to spin the ball once in a while?

Cricket needs planning. When his plans come off it feels good right? Sometimes it doesn't because the batsman also has some plans on how to play him.

Pretty poor timing of this thread given how well he has bowled entire series. He is the leading wicket taker along with Cummins.

He had setup two definite chances, only if Pant did stuff up. Right now, only way he can get batsmen out is bowled or LBW. I could see from his line that he doesn't trust Pant anymore. Still, I would commend his patience that he kept his cool on Pant.

Ashwin's overachievement in the first two tests could eventually have led to the same thoughts as suggested by OP. I'm just glad he got such key wickets in Australia tests, typically a graveyard of orthodox spinners.

Actually, Ashwin bowled quite well today.  Unfortunately, the Kamran Akmal of India dropped easy catches behind the stumps.

Only one catch dropped of Ashwin. That doesn’t means you stop exploring. 
 

Looks like Ashwin prefers fast bouncy pitches and not slow turners. 
 

Lyon will exploit this pitch more than him being both faster spinner. 
 

Id say Jaddu was spinning more and might end up taking more wickets than Ashwin on this pitch.

 

Predominantly leg side fielding will not work on this pitch. You’ve to put close fielders on both sides. There’s no pressure on the batsmen as they are taking easy singles on the vacant off side. Only that joker Rahane standing on first slip smiling through his beard..

The only thing about Ashwin which worried me is his fitness.Ashwin will never be bowling outside the offstump line as he does not have that ability to consistently spin the ball big.He did fine but Smith and Labu are very good batsmen too.

Not taking anything away from Ashwin. He was an important compnent of our WC winning team and is a gun bowler.

But I have to agree with @asterix da. He does come across as a nerd.

You can't judge anyone until both teams have batted. But I'm sure Lyon will bowl attacking lines with proper field setup as he knows these grounds inside out. Ashwin even though he is smart, has the habit of trying too many things when under the pump. Smith and labu are quality batsmen who won't fail always. They are bound to score someday or later. Unfortunately Ashwin cannot copy Lyon or vice versa because they are totally different bowlers.

Ashwin had his success in keeping the leg side stacked up and threatening the inside edge and sometimes the outside edge with the arm ball. He also played on the patience of Aus batsmen by denying singles with leg side field placements. It wont work everyday certainly not on this road. He will be useful in the 3rd innings but I'm more scared of Lyon in the 4th as cracks may open up later on. Its more important that we bowl them out for 400 or therabouts and get a sizeable innings lead like 150 or so.

Tomorrow's first session will be more important but not excited about waking up early to watch it. I've been disappointed before. Once bitten twice shy I would rather sleep like Rohit and Pant during the govind crisis

Impatient folks may not value his efforts yesterday.  But bowling is a man's job.  You have to keep putting in consistent efforts for little or no reward, especially on batting tracks.  The effort isn't always visible, especially to one-eyed folks who don't quite understand what they are seeing apart from reading scorecards.  

 

Sorry to be salty, and there is some validity in pointing out Ashwin's tendency to over-do the 'creativity' at times, but yesterday was not Ashwin's fault.  He did his job, and Pant's failure to do his, meant he lost a golden opportunity to attack Smith with pressure on the scoreboard.  Would have been a very very different game in the Smith vs Ashwin contest.  Because Smith would have been under a lot more pressure and prevented from being as free as he was in terms of his 'positive' footwork, taking risk etc.

Both are different type of bowlers. But it is natural that fans with no brain are jealous of thinking cricketers like Bumrah and Ashwin. Just inferiority complex.
