Covid is a special case. It is not going anywhere till the world is vaccinated and many parts of the world will not even be seeing any vaccine for years at this rate.

 

As a keen advocate of vaccination,he should be at the forefront to get a one time exception to patent so that all capable nations can produce vaccines and vaccinate the worldat the earliest. This is not the time for just grants for research as a solution. That should go on along with maximum access to vaccine to the poorest of nation.

He is making a nuanced argument. He is not a hate monger. He saw this coming years back and warned. People who understand intellectual property know that this is way more complicated than one imagines.

This was a norm 100 years ago with Influenza, but now it is about safeguarding and protectionism for everybody

So just curious what's happening in UP its state where lesser numbers are reported then last week is it due lag or do they have lockdown of some kind. Maharashtra seems have slight dip numbers but it still seems slowly increasing in other states

Some people start with the conclusion that Bill Gates is a monster.  Then they try to fit every little thing he says or doesn't say into that narrative.  But, context is important.  So here:

Both pieces cite a Sky News interview with Gates that ran this week, wherein Gates is asked if it would be helpful to change intellectual property law in order to enable "the recipe for these vaccines to be shared." 

Gates answers, "No," which by itself could be interpreted as him standing up for intellectual property law and refusing to share vaccine formulas with developing nations. But then Gates goes on to answer the inevitable follow up question: "Why not?"

The reason, Gates said, is due to the complexity of manufacturing safe vaccines. 

"There are only so many vaccine factories in the world, and people are very serious about the safety of vaccines," he said. "The thing that's holding things back in this case isn't intellectual property. It's not like there's some idle vaccine factory with regulatory approval that makes magically safe vaccines. You've gotta do the trials on these things. And every manufacturing process has to be looked at in a very careful way."

Moreover, Gates said getting COVID vaccine manufacturers like Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson to share vaccine formulas has already happened — such as the case with India.
