Virat Kohli retires from Test cricket

Once compared to Sachin as an ATG and poised to end as the Greatest test batsman from India. Ended up not even in the top 5 best batters from India. Unreal fall. I kept expecting his comeback cause he always looked good in patches.

Despite his downfall and short peak, he had so many great knocks.

Can recall more memorable, impactful knocks of his than Kana mama's. Despite mama's much superior numbers.

Kohli and Amla had similar careers. Ponting similar trajectory as well but slightly better than these two I feel.

should be our squad for England Test series.

I would have expected Virat to still conquer his weaknesses and fight for his place for one last dance in England series and complete 10K Test runs. However, his priorities with relocation to London seems like mentally he had given up and did not have the hunger for the challenges like England and Australia test series.

Indian cricket is facing an Australian cricket in early 1980s scenarios where they had three greats - Lillee, Greg Chappell and Rod Marsh retire in 1983 and now , pretty much we will not see Kohli, Ashwin and Rohit in whites together almost at the same time.

Lost the fire.

Anyway credit to NZ, they ended the careers of Rohit, Kohli, Ashwin in that one series. These guys were anyway old/jaded/finished, but Kiwis dealt the killing blow.

I guess this is the closest to the truth..

Looks like these guys became too big for Ranji etc. now..

There is no dearth for talent in the country anyways.

My only concern is the way he made a name playing for Delhi when his dad had just passed away..thought he had one last fight in him.

i loved his on field persona - he was consistently authentic with it, always box office, great for test cricket. will be lauded at home and perhaps more so away

Looks like wanted the captaincy, Gambhir disagreed and he retired.

Great batsman and deserved a farewell in front of packed stadium

Gambhir and Ganguly - 2 egomaniacs ruined Virat the test player. It is a shame he is retiring without 10k runs

Clearly they want to play ODI WC 2027. Anyway he was not contributing much now.

Scott Boland thoroughly exposed him

Hope Jaddu doesnt follow them idiotically. Should focus on playing 100 Tests. No future in ODIs

Think his biggest all-weather fans on ICF are @Austin 3:!6 @putrevus @Adamant

Others here had more or less given up on his test career a while back.

Anyway hope for a last dance, 2027 WC jeetna hai. And win that by beating Aussies in the final :cheer:

Not interested in his career anymore bro, for me he is already the GOAT Odi batsman, he cannot do anything more.

Test is the only format where I actually wanted him to stick.

I won’t be nervous checking cricinfo anymore though, always hoping that he ends his test rut.

A part of cricket fan inside me died today, a bit embarrassing to say but i definitely lived vicariously through him, my day would get better any time he scored. As you can understand all this made me a bit of a fanatic instead of a sensible fan, hopefully I do not get attached to any other cricketer this much,  want to enjoy cricket more as a fan of Indian team than a certain individual.

For me his biggest contribution to Indian team was the fast bowling culture that he built. The GOAT Asian test captain for sure.

Nah, he was never going to regain his peak or close to peak level. He looked done and dusted for years.
